Formula question
My coworkers daughter lost her husband tragically a few weeks ago. They just had their first baby 2 weeks before that.
Her daughter is not doing well with it all obviously, and is trying her best to function for the baby.
She is not able to BF anymore because of all the stress. So she is formula feeding.
Does anyone have an Similac coupons they don't need or left over formula. Is there a way that she can get it covered from her insurance given the current situation she is in?
I feel awful for her and just can't imagine how she can even begin to function for her newborn, so I figured giving her ways to get formula where she does not have to worry about how she will pay for everything may help a bit.

Formula question
Oh my how tragic.
It would only be covered if the baby is on a medically necessary type of formula and even then it would depend on the insurance. You'd also need a doctors note. Something like alimentum for example.
Does she need anything else? Clothes? Toys? Bottles? Supplies?
Maybe set up a gofund me page for her. Raising money that way would help.

Formula question
Since the baby is some young it will need multiple Ped visits. Ask for samples whenever they go. Ped offices have tons of full size ready to drink formula and powder formula and if she explains the situation I am sure they can leave with a lot.
The previous time I visited the Ped I asked for a sample because we're trying to find one that my son likes, I left with 3 jars of powder. The front desk woman was all like "take as much as you want, we have tons, do you need a bag to carry it all?"

Re: Formula question
sign up everyone you know for similac online
they will give sample packs to start and then coupons regularly.
combine these with sales at stores for ultimate savings.
for example CVS runs sales @ 25.99 + $5 or $10 ECB when you buy 2. use 2 @ $5 coupons from manufacturer = pay $42 and get $5-10 back to use for next time.

Formula question
I may have a ton of Similac Alimentum left next month. DD's dr wants me to try her on regular formula starting in two weeks and if she does okay with it, I will have a bunch of cases she can have.

Formula question
Thank you all so much for the advice and offers. I spoke to her mom (my co-worker) and she also said thank you all so much for your offers.
I told her to sign up for the coupons (and have everyone they know do the same). I believe she put the baby on regular Similac (blue) and in powder form. They are not 100% sure if he is doing well on this one just yet, since he just got on it within the last week and seems to be getting very constipated from it and crying a lot. She has a visit with her peds office Friday and is going to talk about possible switching him to another one.
I will tell her to speak to her peds office for samples as well.
I feel awful for her...its just another reminder to appreciate your loved ones and put the petty stuff aside.

Re: Formula question
I still get similac coupons in the mail so I will keep my eye out! Plus in my mommy group in FB lots of people post trying to get rid of extra formula they have. I will FM you if anything comes up.

Re: Formula question
Check with the hospital to see if they will donate some given the circumstances.
Also the Target brand of formula is the same composition as the Similac brand and is almost half the price.

Formula question
Might not be applicable anymore...but the Duane Reade inside Port Authority had Gerber formula on clearance for 1/2 price the past 3 weeks. Normally 30ish and I bought one for about 16. (DS didn't like it lol)
If she is nearby she can do a quick check.

Re: Formula question
Maybe she (or her mom) can reach out to her OB office and ask for samples. They get a ton from the formula companies, I've seen stacks of boxes being delivered to the office I go to.
Another idea, if someone close to her is willing to start up a collection, I bet lots of family and friends would pick up a can of formula or a pack of diapers to help out. If it were my friends I'd definitely pick up some formula, diapers, even target gift cards to maybe encourage her to get out of the house, without hesitation.

Re: Formula question
Ugh how awful. I think only if it is specialty formula, some insurances will cover if they have a doctor's note of medical necessity.
I would try posting on local FB mom's groups, I am sure some moms have formula left over to donate or coupons.
