WWYD - if anything

The NYPD cop that was shot and killed lives minutes from me. I'm sick to my stomach over it. Dd1 will be in school with the younger son I think.

I was thinking of dropping something off in their mailbox anonymously. Maybe like a gift card to a local restaurant? Or something for the two sons? I have no clue. I just feel horrible. And their so local to me. I could even get a collection together of my local friends.

Or should I just mind my own business?

ANYTHINNG that you do is extremely nice of you and I'm sure would be so appreciated. It's really up to you and how much you want to do. Usually group things tend to take a little more planning than individual but food gift cards, gift card for the holidays anything would be appreciated

I would not organize a group thing if you don't know them personally but I would absolutely drop off a gift card with a note or anonymously.

I think it's a great idea, and I'm sure they would appreciate any gesture of comfort right now

I'm an area resident and just donated to a couple different fundraisers that they have going. There are three that I know of: Gofundme via Huntington Matters, Gofundme via Sergeant Benevolent Assoc and then there's SmokingShields.org. I'm sure there are others.

I guess in my mind, although I would be extremely grateful for any thoughts, prayers, gifts, assistance, etc. given to us, I'd also find it very difficult knowing that my family and I were thrown into a spotlight that we never intended to be in. Chat Icon

Being a wife of a Sargent with two little kids I would be extremely grateful of anything someone left me...maybe you could do a little hand written note with a gift card with something fun for the kids to do

Absolutely drop off a note with a Gc. I went to high school with the fallen officer, although he was a few years older than me. It has affected so many of my friends and former classmates whose older siblings were in the same grades.

I wanted to do a restaurant gift card but also something for the boys. They're 3 and 4. What would you suggest?

I think a GC for the family would be more than enough. They are small and don't fully understand that much right now. A gift for their mom, is truly a gift for all of them.

This is very sweet of you.

His widow is the VP of the high school in my town. They had collections here, they had a memorial service at the HS with town officials and community.

ETA: they have a gofundme set up to go towards the boys education. You can always donate there or give a check in the card stating your intention for the $.

This is heartbreaking as always

That's really so sweet of you and I would imagine any gift would be greatly appreciated! I'm also local and they live in my town and I know there is a gofundme page that was set up by Huntington Matters. I also know Huntington Jewish Center is collecting money, toys, clothes and other gifts for his wife and boys.

WWYD - if anything

The family lives several blocks away from me...

Two moms on the East Northport Mom's Group (which covers Elwood) on Facebook have been collecting cards, gift cards, toys, and items for the family from local families and businesses to be delivered in a few weeks (they have been in touch with a family member).

I have someone very close to me who was thrown into the spotlight like this due to a tragic loss and this is pretty much how he felt. He greatly appreciated everything everyone did immediately after but also really wanted his privacy back.

I think an anonymous card and gift card would be a nice gesture.

I would also make this suggestion.

In these days they are SURROUNDED by people, gifts etc.

They will need support a month from now when everyone "leaves".

SO, I would suggest to do something like this in a month, and in another month as well as "today".

THAT. that will bring comfort. When everyone has left and its just them.

THIS. The East Northport Mom's group I mentioned above did reach out to an extended family member to ask about needs and, because the family has a lot of support right now, decided to collect the donations and cards for delivery down the line when some of that other support and attention has subsided.

Either way, I'm sure all gestures will be greatly appreciated

WWYD - if anything

This family lives in my neighborhood as well. I think the heartfelt card and possibly a gift certificate to a local restaurant or supermarket would be wonderful.
I know people mean well, but I think if 200 additional toys showed up at their door it would cause a lot of unintended stress to the mother. If you want to do something for the boys, maybe we could take up a collection to buy tickets to Adventureland or a museum or the aquarium?

Yes that's what I was planning on doing. When we lost my mom the first month we were inundated with things. Then after that month things quiet down, nobody is around and it was just us.

I agree about the toys. I'm going to do a gift card to spuntinos and the Elwood movie theatre. Something like that.

I am collecting gifts for the boys if you want to drop something off at my house. Andy's boss started the collection and we are acting as the Huntington drop off location
