Failed my 1 hour glucose test

I was 150. Norm is 135.

Do I have to take the 3 hour?

Did anyone else fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour?

I went out for Thai food the night before with some friends and had Thai iced tea. Not sure if that is what caused my sugar to go up.

Ugh. I hate needles.

I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3. I was dehydrated when I took the 1 hour. Not sure if that means anything but in my head it did lol. I drank a lot of water on my way there and I continued drinking water during the test. (Sunrise allows it) and I passed no problem!

Yes. Failed 1 hour twice... first time I had sushi for lunch (I didn't think about carbs and sugar).

Second time I was really needing to watch my sugar & just barely passed my 3 hour. I was careful with my diet from then on.

Note: my first kid, I passed easily.

It won't matter what you ate the night before.

Don't know if it is a myth but I have friends who said they did not have sugary foods for 3 days prior to the test.

I was planning to cut out anything sweet for a few days prior to my 3 hour test next week. I purposely scheduled my test on Thursday so I can enjoy desserts this Thanksgiving weekend.

Re: Failed my 1 hour glucose test

Yes, you need to take the 3 hour. Personally, I wouldn't eat any differently for 3 days prior to the test try try to pass. If your body has issues processing sugar, you need to know about that and monitor it throughout the rest of your pregnancy.

FWIW, I failed the 1 hour both times with the same score. I passed the 3 hour with my first pregnancy, but barely failed it with my second. I had glucose intolerance, which is treated the same as GD, but I was able to keep my sugar under control and it never progressed to GD.

ETA: I know it's common to fail 1 hour & pass the 3. My office doesn't even do the 1 hour b/c of the false positives. They do a two hour. If you fail, you fail. No 3 hour is done.

Is the purpose to "trick" the test so you pass it? Then you are putting your baby's health at risk. The entire point of the test is to see if you have GD: to see if your body is processing sugars properly. If your body is properly handling sugars, it won't matter what you eat beforehand because your body will process is and you'll pass. If you don't pass, then you need to see why and deal with it to have a healthy pregnancy.

Also, any sugar that your body had from 3 days prior should have already been processed. If your insulin levels are not right, then they are not right. You can't trick the test.

I wouldn't try to trick the test. Honestly I had a soda right before taking the 1 hour and I still passed just fine.

The point of the test is to see if you have gestational diabetes. Why on earth would anyone try to alter their food intake to attempt to pass. First of all you can't. If your body processes sugar correctly you can have as much desert as you want and it won't matter.

I passed with an 84. Did you eat that morning? I had an egg fried in oil with a slice of cheese. I think that works because you need to balance out your glucose. I don't think it's tricking the test. It's common sense. You don't eat a jelly donut for breakfast.

I failed my one hour and passed the three hour with my first DS.

I agree about not trying to trick the test. Just follow the doctors instructions bc if you have GD, it's important to figure it out. I don't think you can trick it anyway. I wouldn't drink a Mountain Dew right before but what you had the night before should be processed and out of your system by the next day.

I know a few people who failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. Don't try to trick the test. GD needs to be monitored and controled if you have it. It's annoying for it's done for a purpose.

Goodluck!

FWIW, with my first, I didn't know I have have the test that day and I had a sugary cereal for breakfast. I had the test 2 hours later and still passed.

I passed 1 hour tests for both my previous pregnancies. I admit I eat sugary foods often. I learned that risk of GD goes up as you get older. Plus my mom has type II diabetes.

I hope I pass when I go in for my 3 hour this week.

Re: Failed my 1 hour glucose test

with DD1 I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour by 2 points.
I was encouraged to follow the GD diet but didn't have to test my blood sugar. I cheated once and a while and DD was born on the small side and very healthy.
With DD2 I failed both the 1 and 3 hour. I was 3 years older and failed the 3 hour by 6 points. I had to test my sugar 4x a day and follow the GD diet. I didn't cheat as often, but DD2 is still measuring small in her 39th week.

Failed my 1 hour glucose test

I failed the 1hr
Passed the 3hr

I didn't care the first or the second time. It's for the baby, it is what it is. My diet was for her anyway so who cares if I had to watch even more what I ate or how much for the last bit? I just didn't care at all about cheating or tricking it. Just did everything as I would normally cause that's the point isn't it. As is. Followed whatever rule it was (fasting) if they said so. I actually had no problem with the orange stuff. Tasted like flat orange soda to me. Meh.

butting in... but my sister just had to do this. Her son was born on Thanksgiving... but she was diaganosed with GD so for a lot of the pregnancy she was checking her blood 3-4 times a day, while following the GD diet. It was hard for her, because she's a teacher--- not exactly easy to quickly test your blood while you have a class full of kids :-/ BUT she managed, and her son is a healthy cutie Chat Icon

How did it go. I failed then passed. The 1hr is notoriously unreliable.

Re: Failed my 1 hour glucose test

I agree about not trying to skew the test. I had a juice box on the way to my appointment not knowing I was taking the test shortly after. I was nervous about passing, but did anyway.

Good luck on your 3 hour!

I had to reschedule because one of my kids broke his arm and I had to take him to an ortho appointment.

I did see my obgyn this week and was told I have a good chance of passing since I failed by not much. Apparently there are a lot of false positives with the 1 hour test.
