Missing school for vacation
My DD is in Kindergarten and I would like to take a trip to surprise my dad for his birthday in January. My DD would be missing 4 days of school.
Do you think that's too much to miss in a row?
It also falls the week that the kids have off for Martin Luther King. She'd be off on the Monday of that week and then go to school Tuesday and Wednesday and then be out Thurs, Fri, Mon & Tues.

I don't think 4 days is too long at all. I took my kids out last year for 4 days and they were in K and 2.
When I told the teacher she said no big deal. Do it now while you can. Enjoy!

Missing school for vacation
Took my kids out for a week every year until they were in middle school. Never a problem. I agree, do it now because when they get older you can't.
Personally though, I don't tell them we're going on vacation. I just say we have to go out of town for a family matter. Some schools may mark it as an unexcused absence.

It's fine. My DS's K teacher said to let her know ahead of time, and she will prepare a trip journal for them. Even if yours won't you could still have her write and draw in a trip journal that she can share with the class.

i say its fine- especially in K. nows the time to do it, before the work gets harder as they get older!
My DS is in K.... we're actually going to be taking him out of school for about 10 days this year. We're adopting another little boy from Korea (like DS was) and we need to make 2 trips there. probably sometime late january, then again in March. our parents all live a few hours away--- so we really don't have anybody that can stay with him for a week to watch him. plus, i think it will be good for him to be involved... i haven't told the teacher yet (waiting until we get exact dates), so we'll see what she says. but i'm not TOO worried, he's been doing well. like i said, now is the time to do before the work gets harder as they get older!!

For that age you should definitely go!! They really aren't missing much at that age. My boys are in 2nd grade and K and I'm taking them out for a week. We have been doing it every year. This will probably be our last year, but it's much easier when they're younger.
Go and enjoy and make memories!!

I take her out for a week.
Kinder was Disney
1st was New York
2nd was San Fran
3rd was Disney
Meh
Looks like 4th is going to be New York again or Yellowstone
We are only allowed 8 unexcused absences. She loses 5 and I just don't care. Family time and traveling to me are as important as sitting in a class. It is important to me. So far her grades haven't suffered. School calendar dates are just easier times to travel.
And frankly I intend to purposely continue as she gets older until *SHE* tells me to stop. Seeing the planetarium in New York is easier during the school year. Going to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry is less crowded while and makes sense while you're class is learning about sound, motion and how light travels. Learning about California's Forests along Highway 1 in the spring and the turning of the leaves in New York during Fall happen during school sessions but explain 4 season better than any book or any window ever can.
I have no problem that my kid knows exactly what the statue of liberty looks like as well as the golden gate bridge and St Louis arch. Next up is Yellowstone. Those are things I think are WORTH up close education.
So what if she misses a few days of school?

Go and have fun! We took DS out 3 days on a row each year from K to 3rd. After that, we felt we couldn't do it anymore.

I pulled my DD for 6 school days in 1st grade for Disney, she didn't miss a beat. I don't have an issue with pulling kids from school, especially if they aren't struggling. Family memories are just as important as school and in the grand scheme of their education, a few missed days here and there won't make or break them.
ETA - She's in 3rd now, we're pulling here for 5 days in May for another Disney trip.
