Moms of Kindergarteners...

what kind of car seat, if any, is your kid in? DS is 6... he's on the small side. we spend A LOT of time in the car because all of our family live a few hours away... we're always road-tripping. AND he's always falling asleep in the car LOL
SOOO i still have him in 5-point harness. his seat converts to a high-back booster that uses the car's seat belt, but we haven't converted it yet.
ANYWAY- a friend of mine posted pic of her son who is only like a week older than mine, and it didn't look like he was in any kind of seat... and another friend whose daughter is 4 posted a pic of her and she's in a backless booster already...
so i'm just curious.... am i being too crazy?? to me, he's not complaining about the harness, and it keeps him safer, so whats the rush to switch him?
what are you guys using for your 5/6 year olds?

Don't worry about what others have their kids in. My son's (who is 1 month shy of 8) cousin is 1 year younger and he has been in a backless booster since age 4. My son is still in a high back booster and we didn't switch him to that until he was 6.

I say keep your son in the 5 point harness for as long as you can. Until he maxes out on height/weight.

People for some reason are very lax about carseats and very anxious to move their kids "up" to the next seat.
My 5.5 yr old will be in a harness for at least another year and a half. Just the fact that she will sometimes fall asleep in the car means she's not ready. Once they slump over the seatbelt is useless.

Most kids I see that are first graders (6) are in high back boosters. We have DS in a 5 point harness because I like it and he can get his seatbelt on and off himself (it's harder than a booster).
I do cheat and have him in a regular booster when we travel.

I had my 5 year old in the 5 point harness until about a month or 2 ago. I had no plans on stopping, but I realized that she was 1 pound under the weight limit for the harness being maxed out so I switched her to the high back with the seat belt.

Re: Moms of Kindergarteners...

DS just turned 8 and is still in the 5 pt harness. He's small for his age. Eventually I'll move it to the booster, but I'm still not in a rush. I don't care what other people do. I'd rather be as safe as I can be.

My 5 year old Kindergartner is in a 5-point harness. My 7 year old 2nd grader is in a high backed booster.

My twins were in 5 pt harnesses right up until they started K this year. My son was outgrowing his seat by height so we got the twins high back boosters. If he didn't outgrow it they'd both probably still be in a five pt harness. My youngest is 4 and I have no plans on changing him anytime soon to a high back booster.

We moved my son out of his 5 pt harness into a high back booster in the car we use for long trips. when he was starting first grade. He too is on the smaller side but hit the weight limit to install the seat using latch so I figured it was time to make the move. In my DH's car and my FIL's car - that he's just in to drive to and from school mainly, he's in a regular booster (since the trips are short and he won't be falling asleep).

I saw kids in a variety of different seats when he was in K - anywhere from 5pt to no seat at all! It baffles me.

ETA - I believe you are in NJ - where it's a law that kids stay in boosters until they are 57 inches tall or 8.

Re: Moms of Kindergarteners...

DD is in first grade, is 6 and is in a 5 point harness seat.
And she will be for a LONG time.
She is tiny and our seat goes up to 65 lbs harnessed- and she isn't even close to that or the height limit.

I don't give a flying shit what others do- my daughter's safety comes before all else and it's a fact that a 5 pt harness is much much safer in a crash

Period the end

ETA- i read an article about a 6 year old who was in a bad car crash and was in just a seat belt- and because a seat belt is not meant to hit a child that age/size properly, she had such severe injuries that the doctor's said she was practically cut in half internally from the seat belt- and they had to pretty much sew her organs all back together.
Her intestines were protruding from her body.

She almost died.
All because her parents were assholes.
It is completely irresponsible to have a 6 year old in nothing at all- not to mention illegal I believe

Re: Moms of Kindergarteners...

Here, everyone who has their kids not in a booster of some kind at a young age should read this:

Story

In this story the child was in nothing. Just a seat belt.
At 6 years old.
Insane

Re: Moms of Kindergarteners...

In Kindergarten a five 5pt harness. Now in second, a high back booster because my kids are tall and outgrew their five point harness seats. I will say most of my kids friends are not in boosters or any car seats at age seven even though it is illegal here. My son was in a high back booster until his 9th birthday. I will have DD in her HBB until she is 58 inches tall. I dont care what other parents do, I care about what I do and I the kind of parent that I am.

Thanks, everybody!! i don't get the rush to switch kids so soon, too... especially in this area with so much traffic!! you gotta be careful!! i mean in the pic my friend posted of her 6 year old son, the seat belt was practically going across his face, and he was slouched over asleep! that can't be safe!
i might share that article on my page, and hope she sees it... LOL
The seat DS is in can harness up to 85 pounds and 57 inches tall... and then as a booster it goes up to 65 inches tall i think. he's only like 43 inches now, so he'll be in this seat for awhile!

My kid is a peanut at 5 years old and is still in a 5 pt. harness. Back in August at his well visit, he was 39 lbs. and 38ish inches. So he'll be in there for awhile.

Definitely share that article.
If one person smartens up from it, you did your job.

What kills me is that when women are pregnant they won't color their hair, get a mani, drink a sip of wine or eat a freaking hot dog or ham sandwich, but then the kid comes out and it's like Russian roulette with their safety.
It BOGGLES my mind

I kid you not, on Friday a car passed me on the way into the school and a boy with a pacifier in his mouth had his face plastered to the window of the backseat. He looked younger than two and was obviously not strapped in at all! I was floored, like stopped in the middle of the street dumbfounded. People are insane.

Omg!! Too bad a cop didn't see that. They would absolutely have been pulled over. Holy shit. How is that not considered child endangerment? It should be!

5 and a half, tall and over 50 pounds and still in a 5 point harness. When I needed new seats we purposely got ones that went to the tallest/heaviest we could find to keep her in a 5 point harness. I remember seeing kids in her nursery school using the booster with the seat belt and thinking that was nuts.
