Opting Out question
DD isn't at the age for these tests yet but I just noticed on FB that in the Pat-Med district they actually send a letter home where you can check different options-
I want my child to participate in all exams
I want my child to opt out of ELA exams
I want my child to opt out of Math exams
I want my child to opt out of ALL exams
Etc....
Then you just check you boxes and sign it and done.
I am wondering if this is the norm or if it's just because Pat Med's Super is very progressive and very against the state tests, etc.
Do you generally have to write your own letter from scratch or does the school send you a form like this?

That is not the norm. In my district, you have to send in your own letter. There are template letters online that you can tailor to your situation.

Re: Opting Out question
Yeah I had a feeling they wouldn't make it that easy.
I wish Michael Hynes was the Superintendent in my district. He is just amazing and very pro child, whole child approach, etc.

Michael Hynes is great wonderful advocate for children.
In our district we send in our own letter. I opt out of all state testing but not benchmark testing as I think that is beneficial to education.

Re: Opting Out question
I live in a neighboring district. Their (superintendent's) stance is pro-testing. I have to write my own very specific letter to opt out of testing. Even with that, they do call parents at times and try to talk them back into it.

Re: Opting Out question
Last year Bellmore sent home a letter like this. I hope they do it again this year.

Opting Out question
Wow, that is the first I heard of that approach. I love it!
I sent an email opting DD out of the grade three tests last year. It is not a big thing in my district- there is a vocal group but they are small in number. I anticipated pushback from my principal but she sent a cordial letter thanking me and there were no issues.

Our district has that letter also. We just check and sign. Dr. Rella is our Superintendent. He is awesome.

Oh yes I heard he is excellent as well. Him and Michael Hynes are pretty much in sync with their progressive ways. You guys are very lucky!

My district has an online form. It has no actual signature. You populate your childs information, and it sends its electronically to the vice principal's email. You get an email confirmation back.
