Spinoff to The weather . . . "Climate Change"
And why isn't it called Global Warming anymore?
That aside, I find all this warm weather and melting glaciers to be very scary. I have read some articles that make me very concerned for our children. Does anyone follow this topic? I feel like we're so relatively helpless when it comes to all of this. Why isn't it all over the news and why did it seem to be barely addressed this election?

If climate change or global warming happens, then a lot of costal communities will suffer.

Spinoff to The weather . . .
It is absolutely scary. They said every year it's the warmest year on record. Yet the new administration believes it's a hoax perpetuated by the Chinese. So yeah. We're screwed.

Spinoff to The weather . . .
I'm also assuming they now call it climate change instead of global warming because people think that if it's 0 degrees outside, global warming doesn't exist.

It already is happening and communities already are suffering. Entire island communities are on the verge or have already had to abandon their homes.
I find it extremely concerning and I do remain hopefully that the states and the rest of the world will continue to work to slow the change. I do wish our president were committed to that as well.

I do too, it's something that actually causes me major anxiety. it's so sad to think that I feel like we've always been considered the leaders in the world on all of the issues at stake. Now we are hoping the rest of the world will continue while we step back 50 years! I still can't believe all the Facebook posts on how great he is! I want to scream at these people!

Re: Spinoff to The weather . . . "Climate Change"
I worry a lot about it. Anecdotally, and maybe my memory is off, but I feel like snow in March and even April (where I live now, an hour north of NYC) and late October/November seems to be something we expect because it happens whereas it seemed like it didn't 10-20 years ago. That's just not normal, IMO.

https://pmm.nasa.gov/education/articles/whats-name-global-warming-vs-climate-change
... The first decisive National Academy of Science study of carbon dioxide's impact on climate, published in 1979, abandoned "inadvertent climate modification." Often called the Charney Report for its chairman, Jule Charney of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, declared: "if carbon dioxide continues to increase, [we find] no reason to doubt that climate changes will result and no reason to believe that these changes will be negligible."3
In place of inadvertent climate modification, Charney adopted Broecker's usage. When referring to surface temperature change, Charney used "global warming." When discussing the many other changes that would be induced by increasing carbon dioxide, Charney used "climate change." ... Within scientific journals, this is still how the two terms are used. Global warming refers to surface temperature increases, while climate change includes global warming and everything else that increasing greenhouse gas amounts will affect.
...
Basically, "Global Warming" is the change that is happening to the global temperature, but "Climate Change" covers the effects, like rising waters, droughts, storms, etc.

This! I teach environmental science. People think global warming refers to individual days. They do not realize that it refers to average global temperatures All year.
Additionally, it is not limited to temperature. It also encompasses things like precipitation (rainfall, snowfall, droughts, forest fires, ocean temperature, etc). It's really scary. I live upstate and the last 2 winters we've barely gotten any snow in the valleys.

Re: Spinoff to The weather . . . "Climate Change"
My friend is a diplomat now but studied on Kiribati during his gradwork research. It's crazy, those poor people will literally need to figure it out within the next decade because their island is completely sinking a day at a time.
Also, I thought I read somewhere that last year was the first year the ozone began to repair itself?

The ozone and global warming are 2 separate issues. By limiting use of CFCs, the ozone should be able to repair itself.

Yes. It is estimated that the ozone layer will completely repair itself in about 40 years.
Climate change keeps me up at night. President Donnie and his climate change denier buddies scare me to death.
I plan to get involved in local climate change efforts. I'll post in case anyone is interested in joining.

Please do! I'd like to join. It's evident that if we ever really do want change and we ever really want anything done around here we need to just do it ourselves!

Great topic....anyone switch to solar? Most people just think of the financial benefits, but it's obviously a much more environmentally friendly way to power your home.

Re: Spinoff to The weather . . . "Climate Change"
The climate change is scary, and I do believe it is happening, but the Science has shown that global warming happened millions of years ago, and then we hit the Ice Ages......I just hope we can repair it before it's too late. I just wish other countries were more on board, such as China. The USA is such a small percentage of the earth.

Re: Spinoff to The weather . . . "Climate Change"
Okay I clearly need to do more research on this topic but I thought that global warming or climate change was caused by the damage to the ozone layer. If the ozone layer is repairing itself what is causing the climate change? Is there a good documentary that can give me the basics? Or a climate change for dummies website?

The hole in the ozone layer is cause by CFCs, which used to be found in refrigerants and aerosol cans. The hole in the ozone layer can lead to an increase in skin cancer. It also can damage plants and algae. This is because the ozone layer acts like sunscreen.
Climate change is caused by the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane gas. Carbon dioxide is being added to the atmosphere at alarming rates due to the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas). Methane gas is increasing due to an increase in livestock such as cows.
If you have Netflix, I recommend watching The Cosmos with Neil DeGrasse Tyson Season 1, Episode 12: The World Set Free. I show it to my 10th graders when we go over Human Impact on the Environment.
