Painting furntiure

I am seriously considering painting our bedroom furniture. It is light wood (probably not real wood) and I hate it. My husband thinks it will never work b/c it gets too tacky (we've had an experience like that in the past). I've heard a lot about chalk paint being best, but is it really?

If you've painted furniture before has it held up? Does it scratch easily? Does the paint chip off? Does it last long?

We aren't really in the market for a new set yet as we are about to refinish our kitchen so any info would be helpful!
Thanks

I used chalk paint on our bedroom furniture. I did it about 2 1/2 yrs ago and it's held up fine so far. No chips or scratches at all. We're not hard on our furniture, but don't do anything special to be careful of it either. I'm very happy with how it came out. I'll post pics later if I can find them.

i refinished a cherry wood china cabinet into an entertainment stand for the basement. The brand of the paint was called Reclaim. I bought it in off-white and it's a small can, but was enough for the whole cabinet. If painting more than one piece, probably buy 2 cans. It was very very thick, almost like custard, and really bonded to the furniture well. It didn't require any prep or sanding at all... I love the way it came out
