How far along were you when you contacted your insurance company to order a breast pump? Also, any recommendations on a specific brand to order?

Can't hurt to call now and find out info on your specific requirements. Some will send them right away. Others won't send it until after the baby is born. Some you can't fill out paperwork until a month before your due etc.

I've had the Medela which was ok. I loved my spectra s2.

My insurance requires you to order within 30 days of the baby's due date. So now I'm almost 37 weeks and I just ordered the other day. I got the Spectra2. I'm excited because I've heard great things about it. My past 2 pregnancies I got the Medela.

I ordered mine about 2 weeks from my due date- not sure about the earliest time I was able to get it.

I got then spectra 2 this time and I like it because it's hospital grade. I had the medela last time and wasn't crazy about it because it was super loud and I feel like not as effective as the spectra 2.

I ordered in December and was due in April. Some companies will not ship out until within 30 days or even 2 weeks of your due date. Mine didn't care. They shipped immediately. I had it by the end of December.

ETA: I second Spectra pumps in general. I like that they are closed system pumps so there is no way for milk to get into the tubing and the pump. I've heard a lot of people found mold in their medela pumps. I got the Spectra 9 from my insurance since I wasn't eligible for the s2 and it's a good pump. Small, powerful but gentle, and doesn't need to be plugged into the wall. I wound up ordering the s2 in addition to keep at work and love it. I like it better than the 9 but it's much bigger and needs to stay plugged in. I keep the s2 at work and use the 9 at home or when I'm going to stay somewhere overnight.

Thanks for the responses.

My insurance company ONLY offers the Medela Double Electric Pump, and I can only order it 7 days within my new date. Not too happy about it, so I'm considering purchasing one privately.

Anyone else have any experience with the Medela brand?

I contacted my insurance right after my baby was born (two months prematurely) and found out I have crappy coverage that entitled me to basically a manual pump.

I was a mess with my baby in the NICU, and ended up buying a Spectra 2. I used it literally once, and then ended up renting a hospital grade Medela (my baby was too premature to nurse and I needed it).

If anyone is interested in buying a Spectra 2, FM me. I will sell mine for less than retail. I literally used it once and all the parts were never used (I used my Medela bottles, tubing with an adaptor), except the back flow protectors that are sold on amazon and cheap to replace.

It depends on insurance and also sometimes the provider you choose. With my first pregnancy they sent it right away. This pregnancy they will not send earlier than 30 days before due date.
I got a medela pump in style w the first and loved it! Trying another one this time, the freemie (hands free) bc it was recommended by a friend. I do highly recommend the Medela!

I couldn't call until I was 28 weeks. They only offered three brands so I went with the medals pump in style.

I called my insurance asked where I can order and placed the order when I wanted didnt need a script or to be a specific window. I had a few options medela in style and spectra s2. I got the s2 and in the hospital iused the medela for 10 days. To be honest I liked the medela better (thought it was a bit easier to use and had better suction) but both are good pumps. I also have the manual lansinoh pump which I hated

I exclusively pumped for both my kids for over a year. I used the Medela pump in style and it worked great. With #2 I ordered the same pump through insurance and left used it as a spare in my office. In the event #3 comes along, I'll use it again.
