Any recommendations for what I will need postpartum in the hospital and also when I get home. What pads do you recommend, what to wear in the hospital, best nursing bras, etc... TIA

Are you having a c section or planning for natural?

I did underwear 2 sizes larger and brought to hospital with me
I used the poise pads I hate the hospital ones
Leggings and tops for hospital
Bring socks and a pair of slippers for hospital
Chapstick is a must
2 nursing bras
I use the lansinoh nursing pads

I had a c section but I hear dermaplast is great for a vaginal delivery postpartum

Make sure to bring with you from the hospital loads of mesh underwear, pads, peri bottle. My hospital didn't offer it but I was recommended the dermoplast spray which was great. My favorite nursing bras were from H&M. At the hospital I wore a button down gown. I also brought with me my Brest Friend which was a must for the first few weeks of nursing for me.

I wore depends, too, and they were great. But make sure you take whatever you can get from the hospital! I asked for an extra pair of the mesh underwear, a couple of the jumbo diaper sized pads for the first two or three days since I bled so heavily, the cooling pads, witch hazel pads, Dermaplast spray, peri bottle, and an inflatable ring.

The cooling pads were used the first two days home and what relief they gave along with depends and those giant pads! After that I switched to regular underwear, regular pads and would regularly apply the witch hazel pads and dermaplast spray. I had an episiotomy and stitches after a forceps delivery so I was a bit sore. I sat on the inflatable ring whenever possible. Sitting didn't hurt, but getting up did. Getting up from sitting on the ring wasn't so bad. My doctor gave me a prescription for painkillers but I never filled it. I was fine using motrin regularly.

I was so afraid of the pain and mess after delivery but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Manageable and I'm a huge baby! Chat Icon

ETA: Also get yourself a stool softener. I wound up not needing it, but that first post partum poop is daunting. It was fine, not painful or anything, but I was so scared to do it! lol!

All of my nursing bras are from Motherhood. In the beginning I lived in the wireless t-shirt type bras. Now I have nicer ones- lace, underwire, etc. All from Motherhood.

I wore a nursing nightgown and robe in the hospital with some flip flops. I was so bone tired I couldn't even face getting dressed the first day. I wore sweatpants and a t-shirt and flip flops home. Make sure you bring like Old Navy flip flops for the shower.

I had a vaginal delivery and had prepped pads before hand - the aloe, witchhazel, frozen pad thing you see on pinterest... never used it. Tried it for 5 seconds and felt like a disgusting goopy mess. I agree with full underwear, loungewear, nursing bras. I used the pads the hospital gives while I was there, and then when home I switched to regular overnight pads and full underwear.

I like the Always Infinity pads once I got home- they were MUCH MUCH MUCH more comfortable and thin than those bulky old school maxi pads the hospital gives.
And they absorbed a lot. Even if you have to double them up it's still better.

I brought some chucks home from the hospital to put on my bed and couch just in case I leaked, but to be honest, once i was home my bleeding wasn't bad at all.

My hospital didn't give mesh underwear, I dont' even know what that is.
I just bought some cheap granny panties in a multi pack from target and wore those for a while

They gave me some cream and that Dermaplast spray to take home and a peri bottle.

I wasn't nursing so a TIGHT sports bra for when my milk came in- that was painful!! Lots of ice, motrin and cabbage leaves to dry it up.

Stool softener might be good to have on hand. The first poop after a vaginal birth is downright terrifying! Chat Icon

The hospital should give you dermablast, stool softeners, the big tucks pads. Mine did not give the mesh underwear, so I was glad I had really big post-partum underwear with me. High-rise briefs worked best for me to keep the tucks in place.

The hospital basocally provided everything I needed ( @nsuh)

Some thoughts:

A boppy for feedings.
Nursing bras from target are pretty good. I got a few cotton bras without any wiring.
I think I just used Always overnights when I got home and took some chucks from the hospital
A belly binder (especially if you have a CS -hospital provided with ds1 had to ask for dsw)
Stool softeners (again, provided with ds 1 had to ask with ds2)
I wore lose pants and nursing shirts while in the hospital and a robe for when I has visitors. I got a few nursing shirts on Amazon, brand was La Clef. Super comfy and functional.

As many others said, the hospital gives you mostly what you need.

I had bought tucks pads and the dermoblast spray and a water bottle, but ended up having an emergency c-section so never needed those things.

I wore huge cotton granny panties for a while and just used overnight pads for the first week or so and then moved to regular pads.

If you plan to breastfeed I highly suggest getting a nipple shield. For me, it's what continued my breastfeeding and I wish I had one in the hospital instead of waiting a week to get one. You also want nursing pads and lansinoh cream.

Everyone pretty much said what I would have said. I agree with depends. I had a vaginal birth and actually was dripping pee and blood for about a week or so. I mentioned to the nurse that I felt very wet and she said it was just blood but the pads were doing nothing. Had dh stop on the way home and get me depends. Best decision. Bringing them this time.

Good Sam didn't give me mesh underwear either.

I'd recommend bringing maternity leggins to wear in the hospital and coming home. I didn't swell at all during any of my pregnancies but from all the IV fluid during labor, I left larger in some areas than I was coming in. My legs were so much bigger they barely fit in my pants.

This last pregnancy I brought the Always infinity overnight pads with me and they were so much better than the hospital stuff. Definitely recommend.

FYI...The underwear the hospital provides is the best I actually took some home (new ones) its so stretchy and comfy IMO and they are disposable. I actually washed them a few times and they were still fine. I still wear them when AF comes around lol.
