Wait, are the people who complain about freeloaders scamming the system for handouts totally admitting they would work the system for entitlements if it suited them?

Posted by nicrae One of my kids got 55K a year to NYU and that's just one example.
Just an aside, was the $55k NYU scholorship based on grades, financial need or a combination of both?

It was a combination of both. He's a really great kid but not the smartest or even in the top 10% of his senior class. His SAT scores were ok, not OMG amazing. He's definitely in the lower income bracket as are most of my students because we are a title 1 school.

Combo of all - one of the managing attorneys at my firm just told us his son (senior at a HS in Melville) is headed to NYU on a 100K scholarship. He's turning down GW, Georgetown, SUNY Binghamton, and a few other higher ranked colleges (deferred EA at Columbia, then denied).

Where is this money coming from? Tax dollars? So basically now so-called "wealthy" individuals (not) have to pay for both their own kids college AND college for strangers? Is that right?
I don't have kids. Why should pay for yours to go to k-12?
Neither is a valid argument. As part of society it's part of our obligation to pay for children to go to school.
This bill ONLY benefits everyone. Can you imagine the kid in NY most inner city crap place knowing there is a chance, with good grades they can go to college?
It gets kids working. It gets kids a future. It makes them productive members of society. It ONLY gives back. It ONLY benefits. I would rather pay for 4 years of college than 15 years of damn welfare.
Teach them to fish. This will pay itself back in spades!!!
I hate to burst your bubble but those "inner city kids" that have good grades are already going to college for free. I am a NYC teacher and between financial aid and scholarships my students don't pay a dime. Every year the financial aid packages that come in are mind blowing. One of my kids got 55K a year to NYU and that's just one example.
Yup, exactly this!
This bill is supposed to help middle class families so it's not gonna do anything for lower class kids. They already qualify for grants that make community college essentially free if not actually free. Plus, the kids that depend on community college as their only option will now be pushed to waiting lists years long because now the kids that may have gone elsewhere will now go to community college because it's free so why not?
It doesn't ONLY benefit. It creates more problems.

Re: Free college? Cuomo budget passes
I will have three kids in college at the same time for many years! I won't qualify for anything that is free, no free tuition, no grants, nada!!!!
I assume both parents would need a w-2 to qualify for this?
