SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip
A senior trip that only 1 in 3 can afford is wrong. But they should've found a less expensive trip instead of billing taxpayers for it.

It's "tradition". The seniors have been going to Disney since the 1990's. This is the first year that the district paid for everything.

Wow, that is an obscene amount of money. We did not do a senior trip. Why didn't these kids fundraiser or pay for it themselves? I hope people who approved this loose their jobs.

I am going to be the odd one out here and say that we pay so much money in taxes for our schools and most of the time its funneled into bureaucratic non-sense that no one benefits from. I think its cool that the kids got to go. I know if my child was one of the kids benefitting from this, I would be ok with it. JMO

What I want to know is how running around an adult playground with a mouse and riding glorified carnival rides is considered even remotely "educational"??? I could see a trip to Europe to see history, culture and art, etc. Not to Disney. Not even close.
Maybe they classified it as a Science trip?? LOL
In Senior year I was taking Physics and we took a trip to Great Adventure on their annual school Physics Day to study the principals and take measurements. It was fun to be in the park with kids from all over NY, NJ and PA for the same reasons.

I feel like our science class did that to Adventureland. I don't remember but it sounds familiar now that you mention it.

We also did this in high school. Our physics teacher designed an activity sheet that we had to complete in teams. Like calculate the velocity of this specific ride, etc. etc.
It was actually a fun day, in a nerdy way

I don't think the senior trip is supposed to be educational for anyone. Isn't it a fun thing?
My son a senior, but there is no trip organized through school.

Wouldn't this kind of spending need to be voted on at a BOE meeting? I can't believe something like this passed!
It was- the BOE passed it
ETA: I believe the vote was unanimous

Total BS, and I can tell you, many parents are NOT happy about that in their district. Especially parents who are having to fight for services for their children.
So are taxpayers who don't have kids in school. Taxes are high and they just passed a 40 million dollar "renewal" bond in 2015 because the schools were falling apart. There were leaking roofs, falling ceilings etc and the BOE thought a trip to Disney was a good use of taxpayer money? People are furious. There are 4 BOE seats up this year and I don't think anyone will be reelected.

Omg, what utter horseshit! Seriously, are they joking? Cirque de Soleil relates to French class? Entry bracelets led to an ethics debate (huh??)? How can they even say such nonsense??
I don't think my school had a senior trip. I wouldn't have gone anyway, but I can guarantee if they did, it was 100% parent funded. Every little field trip cost $$. A free trip to Disney??? Unreal!

Re: SWR School District spends $153k on senior trip
Im mixed about this because i am not in the district and dont know what students are lacking in their schools
I like that it keeps it fair so ALL students can go. How much it it per student?
My kids are 11 and 13 and havent been to disney and would be thrilled
I do wonder what insurance risks are though. That could be expensive

I skimmed the article. Does Epcot really teach about cultures and traditions? Havent been since i was a kid. Why not just visit families in Queens!

I agree. There are so many other ways to have an ethics debate other than the finger scanners at Disney World.
I find it laughable that the superintendent is saying to blame him. He is an interim superintendent. He retired from another district on Long Island (one I happened to work for) and what a lot of retired superintendents do is act as placeholders for a year or so until districts can find a permanent replacement for their superintendent. He was also in Three Village for a bit if I recall correctly. So this is no skin off his back, won't effect his career if he is let go, etc.
School district are cutting EVERYTHING and we live in one of the most expensive places in the country. I would be furious if I lived in this district. There are plenty of other places to go to have similar learning experiences.
