Maybe I'm just hardened or something but I didn't think the suicide scene was THAT bad.
She cut her wrists. There was blood.
I've seen that in plenty of movies.
I've seen way worse on TV and in movies.
The way people were talking I was expecting a war like scene.

I kind of agree. Movies are so extremely violent lately, much worse than that scene. To me the scene was not graphic just very very sad.

Before I watched, when I heard people talking about this possibility, I thought it was ridiculous. Now, I'm kind of intrigued to see what they do (and if they somehow address all the criticism they've gotten.)

I haven't watched it, but want to do it, as soon as I'm done with the series I'm watching now. I have a 6th grader, and heard that some middle schoolers and even 5th graders are watching it. A friend that lives in my country, mentioned that the same is happening there. By the comments I have read, I think it is too much for that age and can be disturbing. Those that have watched it, what do you think?

Thanks! I thought the same. DS has not asked for it or talked about it, but I was very surprised to hear that other kids his age were watching it. As a PP mentioned, I think it'd be better if they read the book instead of watching the series.

Personally, I think its a little heavy for a 6th grader. The first few episodes I think would probably be okay but then the content gets a little mature and graphic. I would say you should definitely preview it and then make a decision.

I also think there is a lot in it that a 6th grade should't watch. Rape, drinking, drugs, sex. These topics should still be discussed and maybe use the show as a conversation starter but I'm not sure I'd let a 6th grader watch it.

They were green lighted for season 2. I think its good. Each character had their own issues that teens (and others) deal with everyday in our society and we are so afraid to talk about it. I'm hoping that this will be a step in the right direction to open up the conversations.

You are correct suicide does get swept under the rug and there is such a stigma attached to it. There needs to be more awareness of it and mental illness however from what I have read they way this was done was in poor taste and the ending it disgusting and extremely graphic and has left a few people i know traumatized.
The actual suicide scene was graphic and yes shocking to many. But I do not think the entire show should be judged on that alone. And I know many fast forwarded through that scene.
But I do think you can't judge on that alone and I do think you should give it a chance and just know that you might want to skip that portion. The show has so much more to it than just suicide and IMO is so important in today's society.
I recently had to have a conversation with my 5 year old that I NEVER thought I would have to have and really woke me up to what is going on in the world today.
I finished it today. I watched the series in 5 days. I agree with your about that suicide scene (I wasn't able to watched it, I had to close my eyes)... But the series is more than that scene itself.
I think it taught me a lot. Specially not to minimize the kids feelings. I watched a good after show that mentioned that teenagers or kids think that the problems are forever and don't have any solution. It actually helped me today with my 11 DS when he was feeling sad about something. Not to minimize, to be aware, to listen with the heart. Unfortunately it is a very sad but real issue. In the after show they mentioned also that the second cause of death in teenagers is suicide... and that even starts at age 10
