Pediatric GI recommendation
Hi,
Does anyone have a recommendation for a pediatric gastroenterologist in Queens or LI? My two year old daughter has had elimination issues for several months. The first one put her on Miralax but there's no plan to take her off it. My husband and I have read that long term use is not healthy. She sometimes still goes for 4+ days without a BM even on Miralax, fiber, fruits and vegetables.

My son sees Toba Weinstein with Cohens children's which I believe is now LIJ? They are located in lake success 516-472-3650

Whoever you see, do NOT see Dr. David Gold who is part of Good Samaritan.
That office really screwed me on a bill for a general office visit. I should have paid a regular specialist copay and they charged me a few hundred dollars for the office visit, despite them being fully in network.
Fought with them and Good Sam hospital for six months to no avail.
I'll never see another Good Sam doctor again.

That office really screwed me on a bill for a general office visit. I should have paid a regular specialist copay and they charged me a few hundred dollars for the office visit, despite them being fully in network.
Fought with them and Good Sam hospital for six months to no avail.
I'll never see another Good Sam doctor again.
Wow I'm surprised! I read good things about Dr. Gold on this forum. However, he was too far out on LI for me to fully consider.
That's a bummer for you, I'm sorry to hear about your experience.

Dr Gold is excellent. We left Dr Marciano and now see Dr Gold. The issue the poster has is with billing and office staff not the Dr. Dr Marciano is great as well, we only left his practice because it was too far for us to travel, we live in mid Suffolk.

We saw Dr. Daum with Winthrop. His offices are in Mineola.
Although I was not thrilled with his bedside manner,he was nice enough and he was helpful and specifically specializes in Encopresis treatment.
Miralax is in his regimen though - so if this is not the route you want to be on - I would not go see him.
It was a very long tough road for us, my son withheld bowel movements for a long time. It was exhausting...thankfully in time as most things do, it passed and once he was a little over 3 he potty trained and never had an issue since.

Dr. Lazare in Mineola. Same office as Dr. Daum, but don't go to him. He is absolutely terrible

We read that long term use of Miralax is not good for the body. I've been trying to wean her off by giving her Benefiber and reducing Miralax from 2x a day to 1x/
What ended up working for your son? We are starting toilet training this Memorial Day weekend, and I think the BM will be very difficult.

Is it because she's a "holder"? I had to go through that with DS1. He became a holder after a pretty bad stomach virus. I think my poor little guy got traumatized with his diarrhea that once he got better, he'd hold his poop for days, I'm talking about up to 6 days sometimes! We tried increasing his fiber through food, water, even homemade remedies like warm prune juice with butter but nothing was working. My pediatrician then (who I love!) recommended Dr Bitton. We see him in Babylon. But I know their main office is in Lake Success. He said that if u're dealing with a holder, no matter how much u increase their fiber/liquid intake, they just won't go and keep holding it. I did not wanna use Miralax because I've read many articles that talk about causing bad side effects including neuropsychiatric problems. I didn't even have to say that to him, because he suggested for ds to be on exlax till he feels comfortable (without resistance) to do #2. It has worked really well, and we're now lowering the doses so he doesn't have to take anymore. I'd recommend not to go crazy giving too much fiber, because if u have a holder, her willingness to hold her poop will counteract the extra fiber making constipation even worse! Good luck momma!

Quite honestly...time. We actually never used much Miralax even though thats what we were told we should do - 2 capfulls a day at least - Im sure as you know, the idea is for the stool to become to water based that its impossible for them to hold. But my son is a VERY picky eater AND drinker. He will only drink water, no juice or milk, so disguising the taste was literally impossible. The only thing that would work on occasion was applesauce, but not always. Anyway, since it was so hard to get the miralax in his system, he never had much of it - so in turn, we also had to give him suppository's every few days. He would literally hold it forever until he cried from the stomach pain. It was awful. But as another poster said, its completely mental - they associate a couple painful bowel movements and think that every passing will be painful and therefore will do anything in their power to hold it. Over time, it became less frequent - i think eventually he just mentally matured a bit - and slowly became less fearful? And once he trained, like I said, it stopped completely. But I dont think that was the cure - he was much better by that time and i suppose once he started going on the potty he wanted to go for some reason, maybe because it was new and exciting, who knows...hopefully you find a doctor who can give you more alternatives for quicker results.
