Keeping kids engaged through the summer

My DD will be starting first grade in September. She has learned so much this year in Kindergarten and I want to make sure that she doesn't forget the basics over the summer.

Any suggestions for Apps or workbooks that we can use over the summer to keep up with her reading, math and sight words?

Flash cards for the math facts and just have her continue to read different books over the summer. I wouldn't go crazy

I didn't go crazy just made sure she read all summer.
At the end of K the teacher told us her reading level and our library had all the children's books categorized by color codes based on the reading level.
So we would just go every week adn get books at and a level above.

Also, the K teacher sent home a big packet to do over the summer and she did a few of those but I didn't push it.

She was fine entering first, didn't slide back at all

Re: Keeping kids engaged through the summer

I just went to the meet the next grade night. My twins are in k and will be in 1st grade in sept. The most important thing they emphasized was writing. The teachers (all the 1st grade teachers spoke) said that they are expected to do A LOT of writing in 1st (and usually this is not the kids favorite). They recommended to get a notebook and let the kids decorate it and have them write in it a couple times a week. Let them write about whatever they want, make it fun. They could write about something fun they did, their favorite ice cream flavor, where they want to go, whatever. The most important thing is that they write and it's fun so they don't dread it.

And of course reading, reading, reading.

Every year I get my kids a brain quest workbook. They are expected to do three pages a day. I tell them you have 24 hours in a day. I get one of them for the workbook. I also expect them to read during that hour too.

We focus on reading - we join the library summer reading club and log through July.

I also try to get him to write since they say that is what slips the most during the summer.

At that age, I remember getting DS workbooks from B&N. They have all kinds. I made him do 1 page of math, 1 page of English, and we read at night.

Re: Keeping kids engaged through the summer

My kids will be going into 3rd and 2nd. They have a summer journal where they have to write 1x a day. I get brain quest workbooks and they do 3-4 pages a day. I have a math app on their iPads where they do 10 mins. And they both love reading so I don't have to set an allotted amount of time, but everytime they read 5 books, they get to buy a new one.

We also plan a weekly "fun facts" type of thing. One week will be about planets, countries ((we make foods to try for each meal and enjoy customs)), we do helping hands once a week where we donate time and effort, which can be as simple as going to a park and picking up trash or going to a nursing home and playing cards with someone who doesn't see family often.

I need to have a schedule going with 4 kids though, otherwise I go crazy haha.

We join the reading club at the library. For me that's enough. I want summer to be fun.

Re: Keeping kids engaged through the summer

I would encourage them to read and write every day, travel journals, made up stories, etc. I'm also working on a few math skills throughout the summer as well.
