Wedding invite - only ppl they know? wtf
I heard this on the radio the other day but didn't hear the followup report.
It was one of those "One of our listeners got a weird invite and we want to know what you think so call in"
Apparently one of the listeners got a wedding invite and it said no kids (which I am fine with) and it also said only guests that the wedding party knows are allowed"
what the...thinking back at the last 3 weddings I went to. 1. my wife and i knew the bride 2. my wife's cousin who I never met 3. old friend from college who never met my wife
So in case 2 I would not be allowed to go and in case 3 my wife wouldn't be allowed to go?
I thought it was a weird thing, has anyone heard of anything like this?

Presumably someone with their spouse would be invited as "Mr and Mrs ____" on the envelope. I interpreted this to mean someone who is single and wants to bring a date can only bring a date the wedding couple know, not applying to spouses.
I could be wrong and I don't think it's fair regardless, but that's how I read it.

I read it as they don't want you to come and bring your 3 cousin twice removed that they don't know. This could also be because of parents inviting work people they don't know. I think it's just more specific then most invitations.

I don't really follow this. If someone is invited with guest why does it matter who they bring? If you don't want to invite your mom's work friend then dont invite them or don't invite them with a guest.
Like a pp said, I would assume spouses were invited but people are so weird sometimes who knows. The whole thing sound dumb.

I understand the rationale...
I wouldn't want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a party where I only knew half the people there.
Doesn't mean I would do this, but I can understand a little of the reasoning behind it....

Re: Wedding invite - only ppl they know? wtf
We had a loose no one we didn't know rule--but it didn't apply to guests. Either you invite people with out a guest, and if someone is dating someone you know, you invite them both, or you just invite everyone with a guest. the wording used in the example is tacky.
For me, it was more that I didn't want people that my MIL worked with that my DH didn't know or my Dad's cousin's that I didn't know.
We did end up making a few exceptions.

My BIL's wife did something like this. Their minimum was 125 and she wanted to keep it to 125. She only invited those with a guest only if she considered them to be in "serious relationships".

I agree that I can understand it. I hated having to meet people on my wedding day - making small talk with my inlaws friends who I hadn't met prior to that day and will likely never see again. It was a little annoying to be honest. But my view is the day is not really about you and your husband if you have a big wedding. You have to let your parents and guests enjoy the celebration as well. If you want it to only be about you and your husband, elope!

In that case, don't invite people with guests unless you know their Significant other. Don't write that shit on an invitation. I swear all sense of taste and etiquette is going out the window these days....

Agreed. I get the WHY, but if you give an open invite to bring a guest, you don't get to say "You can bring a guest, but, oh not that one."

I agree with this.
We did this. We did not invite any friends with guests that were not already engage married or in a very very serious relationship.
I get some may not agree with that but we were on a budget. I wanted to limit the amount of guests and I refused to blow more than i did on my wedding. (I really wanted to just go to vegas but my mom convinced/guilted me not too)

I can understand that, but it borders on tacky. Just invite singles without a plus one.
You're going to piss people off one way or the other.

this is exactly how I thought they meant it. That if you are invited with a plus one, that you only bring a guest if they know someone in the bridal party.
I don't agree with it at all, though. At that point, you might as well just not invite people with a plus one if they aren't seriously dating someone...
For our wedding, we only invited people with guests if they were in a serious relationship, engaged, or married. While you should technically invite every adult with a guest, we had 230 people at our wedding, and would've easily been close to 300 if we invited guests

I don't think they mean you can't bring your spouse, even if they never met them. I think they worded it wrong but just meant they don't want single guests to bring dates they aren't serious about. Its a tacky request but I guess I see why they made it. A cousin brought a random guy to my wedding and now he's in so many pics and we never saw him again and don't even remember his name. So I get it, but I personally don't think i would print that request on an invite.
