Manicures
I'm going on vacation and thinking about getting a gel manicure. I've done the UV gel before and it kills my nails. Is there anything less harsh on your nails? I think there's a powder gel? Whats the difference between uv and powder??
TIA

Yes. And fyi....powder gel killed my nails 10 times worse than any gel or shellac. Avoid that. I had it in Oct and my nails are STILL not right!

Hmm, maybe? I get mine done at a hair salon but my girl is booked for years in advance. I suppose you could call around?

Shellac and Gel manicures are the same thing. Shellac is a name brand and the Gel is a generic term for all the brands.
So if the OP has had a Gel and was unhappy then Shellac will be the same.
And powder is just as bad.
Anything they have to file and rough up your nails will do damage.

Re: Manicures
I do powdered gel and it does ruin your nails but I also just peel mine off. Def. Doesn't hurt my nails as bad as regular UV gel but I clearly don't take care of my nails so well since I don't take them off correctly.
I like powder better just because I rather not put my hand under the UV lights.
Some nails salons have that new nail polish that is supposed to last longer than regular nail polish I guess its advertised gel with out the UV.

I have zero damage to my nails and I've been getting it done for years. They don't file the tops of your nails.

Re: Manicures
All of that stuff can wreak havoc on your nails.
Honestly the best thing you can do would be to use a polish you own for a regular manicure, and bring the bottle with you on your trip for touch-ups. Bring a bottle of quick dry top coat as well and apply it during your trip every two or three days if you want to extend your manicure. Metallic polishes tend to chip less than cream polishes - you can get a lot of wear out of a good metallic polish.

Shellac and gel are the same thing. So if she doesn't like gel, she won't like shellac.
To the OP: I get gel, but not every time. So far, it hasn't damaged my nails. But that is why I only do it sometimes, like for vacation, or if I know I have something coming up, but have to get the manicure way in advance.

The salon I go to has something called Vinylux. It's regular polish that lasts longer. No gel or powder - just regular polish. My mom gets this every so often and it does last the 10 days it advertises.
I go to Ace Nails in Massapequa next to All American.

Re: Manicures
Yes CND Shellac is the name brand of a UV gel nail polish. Essie makes a UV gel polish as well They are all the same but I happen to prefer the CND Shellac brand. But either way, they will damage your nails the same.
The problem isn't even the filing of your nails- it is the removal process. You have to soak in acetone and even if it is done 100% correctly, acetone is HORRIBLE for your nails and cuticles. It will dry the shit out of them and thus cause problems if you use it long term. Dry nails will peel and crack and become weak.
The powder gel was even worse IMO and lasted less than a week and was uncomfortable to use my nails as they were thicker than normal. It was gross IMO
I have started only getting gel mani's for special occasions or vacations where i need it to last longer than 2 days. A few times of year isn't so bad as doing it all the time. For the rest of my life, I just do my own nails with Zoya polish and Essie Good to Go and I get maybe 2-3 days out of it. I then just do touch ups to get through the week.
I have tried the Vinylux and to me, it chipped just as quickly as plain old nail polish. It didn't work for me at all

Re: Manicures
I recently had a powder gel mani for the first and after I had it removed my nail were in terrible shape. Never again.
I've done Shellac and my only complaint about that is needing to put your hands under the UV light.., though I'm sure once in a while is fine.
I moved from Wantagh a year ago and had Shellac done here Fantastic Nail Spa

I've been doing the powder gel, lasts almost 3 weeks for me. My nails actually have been growing instead of breaking
