Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
I won't be watching.
I've had the privilege of seeing 2 amazing eclipses - one total lunar eclipse and one partial solar eclipse in Hawaii with a professional astronomer and specially outfitted telescopes. I don't know if anything can compare.

No I'm too paranoid of going blind. I don't even trust the glasses. I read something from an eye doctor on FB and it scared the crap out of me. Not worth it to me
You'll appreciate this Nell.My boss told me yesterday she may not come in Monday since it's supposed to be a beautiful day and she wants to go to beach. I said not on Monday, its the eclipse, you have to be careful! She laughed at me, said she won't not live her life because of it , and she also thinks we are too far away, and you can't go blind from it! I could only shake my head and hope in net couple days she actually reads an article or something!
You won't go blind from just being outdoors lol. As long as she doesn't make a habit of staring up at the sun, it's just like any other day.

Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
The problem is that the moon blocks the light from the sun, but not the rays. So normally when you look at the sun the light hurts your eyes and you look away. But on the day of the eclipse if you look at the sun the light won't make you turn away, but the rays can burn your eyes. So being outside is fine just don't look at the sun!

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
SO if you don't have glasses and don't want to risk going blind what is the plan for Monday? Stay indoors and watch it on the T.V? or go outside and just tell your kids to now look up? I think this will be too much of a challenge for my kids - if I tell them to NOT look up they will most certainly look up!!

Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
Honestly, with all the news of the fake glasses I just don't trust it. My daughter is in daycare and I will have to pick her up during eclipse time. I asked the director of the school they were going to keep the kids inside at that time and what could I do if I had to pick her up at 3:30 and she hadn't heard of the eclipse at all. She said she guessed they would just have to keep the kids inside. I may keep her home.

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
If you have two pieces of cardboard/cardstock and a pin, you can make a pinhole camera.
Besides being very simple, it forces everyone to look in the opposite direction of the sun.
https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/make-pinhole-projector.html
DIY: Simple Card Projector The simplest and quickest way to safely project the Sun is with a projector made from only 2 pieces of card or paper.
You Need: 2 pieces of stiff white cardboard, e.g. 2 paper plates alternatively, 2 sheets of plain white paper a thumbtack, a sharp pin, or a needle
What to Do:
1. To make a quick version of the pinhole projector, take a sheet of paper and make a tiny hole in the middle of it using a pin or a thumbtack. Make sure that the hole is round and smooth. 2. With your back towards the Sun, hold 1 piece of paper above your shoulder allowing the Sun to shine on the paper. 3. The 2nd sheet of paper will act as a screen. Hold it at a distance, and you will see an inverted image of the Sun projected on the paper screen through the pinhole. 4. To make the image of the Sun larger, hold the screen paper further away from the paper with the pinhole.
There are plenty of other, fancier versions of the same concept, but it's all the same idea. Basically a "camera obscura" that's been in use for centuries.

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
NASA is also going to be live-streaming the eclipse from this site:
https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-live-stream
From here, you can watch the eclipse in basically real-time, but at a much better quality, and no danger.

Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
As long as you don't look directly at the sun, you will be fine outside. It will be dark outside at 2:44, but not dark like the middle of the night.

I wouldn't even mention it. Do they normally stare nonstop at the sky on cloudy days? I think it will be a non-issue.
ETA: Its also only a danger from 1:15pm-4pm. It's not the entire length of the day-- so plenty of time to leave the house!!

Thank you, I'm quite aware of that fact. My point was, my boss doesn't believe that staring at the sun can cause blindness and she has two little kids that she plans to have on the beach that day, who may stare at the sun, since obviously they won't know any better since they won't be told not to.

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
I plan to keep my 1 year old inside, since there's obviously no way for me to communicate to him to not look at the sun. But my 4 yo is interested so I will probably take her outside during it. We waited too long and now we can't find the glasses anywhere, so we might make the viewing box craft I've been seeing on Facebook. Ive been drilling it in to her that she can't look directly at the sun, but since shes so young and might be tempted, I'm prepared to get her right back in to the house if I catch her looking up.

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
I'm completely freaked by this. Mostly because so much conflicting info.
Day care is keeping the kids inside that day and I'm glad about that.
I don't totally get it, I never understood science.

Re: Anyone planning on watching the eclipse?
I'm meeting up with a few friends for lunch and plan to see the eclipse. I ordered glasses online but ended up getting a refund because they ran out.
