I think she should 100% reimburse you for all vet bills and medication related to treating the puppy for this illness. I would be pissed that she wasn't more careful.
But I wouldn't get rid of the puppy. It's not the dog's fault and I would feel bad doing that to an innocent animal.
I would make sure the puppy got treated and if you need to quarantine it because you are worried about your other dog and your kids that is fine.
But since it's treatable I wouldn't return the dog.

I know it's frustrating to be cleaning up diarrhea, and going back and forth to the vet, but it's part of having a pet. They get sick, they make messes, it's frustrating.
I understand that the breeder misled you, and that I would be pissed about yes
Is she offering to compensate you for your vet bills at all?

I would be annoyed at the situation. I would expect the breeder to pay for the vet bills but I would not give the puppy back. The illness will run the course and it will be fine.

Edited because I saw your response. I think you should just give the dog back. I think you are just completely unhappy about the situation. She said she would take it back.

OK I get the frustration; but accidents do happen.

She was at fault most likely for introducing the puppy too soon. But as you said, Giardia is treatable.

It's sad; because it almost seems as if you don't even want the puppy anymore because of the "extra care" you need to put into it.

But you mention the breeder is willing to take it back. She also offered to reimburse you. You said no. I am not sure what else you want her to do.

If the puppy has already been medicated; I am pretty sure the chances of him/her spreading it; to humans even, are pretty slim.

How long has the puppy been on the meds? Are you taking him/her for follow ups to see if the parasite is gone? Maybe your puppy will heal faster than what you have read on others.

Hopefully it works out for all involved.

Just my two cents -
I think you are extremely unhappy with the situation. However, if your child was born on day 1 with a treatable illness would you want to give it back. It happens, no one can guarantee anything. The breeder was wrong for putting out a claim of no illnesses and you were wrong for believing that claim. But at this point, I think you resent the puppy. And will never see it as more than a nuisance. Puppies get sick. Puppies chew things. Most of all, puppies make messes. I think you should give the dog back, regardless of how your child will feel.

Giardia is 100% treatable. PIA yes but not the end of the world. If she is paying then no I would never send the dog back. IMO when you get a puppy even if they say 100% free from...you never know and I would expect that the puppy could end up with any of the typical puppy things.

I have a new puppy and while he was treated for the typical puppy things I am takign him to his first check up expecting something.

I would ask for reimbursement for all veterinary care despite your earlier refusal--it is a very common ailment and while the breeder claimed it would not happen it could have been beyond her control--the dog could have picked it up at the vets office--your older child can handle the dog as long as they use good hand washing techniques after touching the dog.
Personally, I would keep the puppy and deal with the illness--it is not what you wanted but pets get sick and it is beyond our control.

Regardless of any claim a breeder makes, there is a chance a dog will be sick.
A breeder is not God, they can't control everything.
They can do their best but you cannot guarantee an animal won't get sick, just like you can't guarantee a child won't get sick no matter how much you take care of yourself in pregnancy and how careful you are after the child is born.

That is the bottom line here. When you decide to get a pet it's the chance you take no matter what the breeder claims.

If this hadn't happened, something could have popped up a month from now or a year from now. Then what?
Would you want to get rid of the dog if it came down with something a year from now?

Just because you got the puppy from a reputable breeder doesn't mean the dog is not going to get sick. Giardia is extremely common in dogs and I'm surprised the breeder would even "guarantee" that her puppies wouldn't have it. Our dog had giardia as a puppy and also a number of times afterwards. As someone else said it's annoying, but not anything I would necessarily be concerned about. I didn't have an infant when we first got our dog, but there were definitely times my dog was treated for giardia when my DD was young. I just wouldn't let the dog near the baby. I think the chances of the dog giving something to the baby or your older child are very very slim.

I would just ask for reimbursement of vet bills at this point, but puppies are a lot of work regardless of where you get them from and they can also have all sorts of unknown illnesses (just like children). I wouldn't give the dog back just because of this one thing, unless you feel that it's just not worth the work.

My older dog had Giardia when I first got her. Its easily treatable. Gross to deal with diarrhea but not a big deal. I would ask for money for vetting and leave it at that.

Any puppy is a lot of work. A puppy and an infant is a TON of work. You really seem in over your head here.

Regardless of any claims made by the breeder - you had to know that there's chance the puppy could get sick. I understand your annoyance, but it really seems like you only see one option here, and seems like you don't want to dog or the responsibility to care for it, so just give it back now while it's still small and easily rehomed.

What I would do is keep and treat the dog.
What I think you should do is give the dog back based on the tone of frustration I'm interpreting in your posts and yes, I realize true feelings/tone may not be best conveyed over a message board.

I would like to add that I sincerely appreciate the honest opinions. Since I am frustrated, I needed a sounding board to sort my thoughts out. I also want to say that I feel I am not bonding with the puppy because I am frustrated (and fearful regarding my infant) about the mere possibility of human transmission. So that is impeding my attachment to the puppy.

Honestly, you sound like you are not ready for any puppy. Give it back and move on. We got a puppy and she was pee and poo wherever she felt. Many times she had loose poo for no reason at all. Puppies are so much work. It's too bad the dog is not well but you are in over your head. You have no sympathy for the dog, it just sounds like a bad decision all around.

I really, really think you should give the pup back. I agree with pp, you are in way over your head and it isn't fair to you or to the dog.

Wait until your kids are a bit older and then get another dog if you really want one. Personally, I would only get a dog from a shelter but I know there are a lot of different opinions on this.

No breeder can guarantee 100% that their dogs won't be sick. It's just not possible for them to guarantee and they should never have made that claim. With that said, for me, I wouldn't have attempted to buy a puppy knowing I also have an infant. That's a TON of work, even if the puppy wasn't sick. Do you think you would be equally overwhelmed had the dog not been sick? It just sounds like a lot to handle at the same time.

I know you said that your other child will be very upset if you give the dog back, so think about that too before making your decision. The sickness will go away and you will be able to bond with the dog then.
