When did your LO start coloring within the lines? My LO is in pre-K and scribbles most of the time.

Dd had an OT evaluation at 4 and if I remember correctly they looked for them to not go over 1/4 inch outside the lines.

My son is in K and still scribbles. He doesn't even come close to staying in the lines.

It depends on his mood. DS is 5 and in K and can stay in the lines if he feels like it. Or he scribbles sometimes.

Around the age of 4-5 they should be able to color a good amount of the surface area of a given object with occasional deviations from the given lines

To help then learn this skill set you can outline an area and have them try to stay inside that given section

DD started to around age 4 (os currently 4.5 and we still have scribble about 1/3 of the time)
DS is 3 and if he concentrates he colors in the lines better than her

about half way thru nursery school last year. I kept everything they sent home and the progress was awesome. She also colors at home ALL THE TIME. As soon as she got home from school she would color.

Do you correct your child or encourage him/her to stay within the lines? My DD is no where near the lines. I never thought to correct her.

Re: Coloring in Lines

Depends on the kid. My oldest was at the end of Kindergarten when she really started to get the hang of it. My little one in pre-k but she really tried at it and wanted to be like her big sister.

*Can* they color in the lines if asked/told/shown? Sometimes they just don't have the patience and it's easier to scribble.

Exactly this. My DS just turned 4. When he sits on his own all i get is scribble. If i sit with him and urge him he can color in and around the lines with purpose. He just doesnt care to on his own. Sigh!
