Re: coloring within the lines
Usually around 5 years old. Sometimes I will outline the picture to be colored in a sharpie to draw the child's attention to the line. If they really have trouble, I use colored glue or puffy paint or even wiki sticks as a border. There is a wide age range with this skill because it depends a lot on motivation and attention to task.

Re: coloring within the lines
I think this is a developmental skill combined with practice makes perfect so it will depend alot on the child. I am assuming you mean completely within the lines? I would say 4-5. DS is 5 and can color within the lines fine and has been for a while. I would say though he isn't the best at coloring in general because he isn't into it and only does it when he needs to for school. I think some of the girls he is friends with that love to color were young 4's and doing it well and I would say DS was mid-late 4s.

Re: coloring within the lines
DC were between 4 and 5. Some closer to 4, some closer to 5. All could do it at 5.

Re: coloring within the lines
DS can *mostly* do this, and he's almost 4.5. However most other kids in his class (ages 4-5) can color much more neatly than he can.

Re: coloring within the lines
I agree between 4-5 they start to master this. I remember last year when my son was in pre-K - they commented early on how well he colored (esp for a boy) at - he had just turned 4. The teacher said most boys don't take the time yet but by the end of the school year they all start catching up for the most part.

Re: coloring within the lines
My DD is just over 4 and I just noticed she has started coloring in the lines and much more neatly, plus with varied colors. So 4-5 sounds right tome.

I'd say 5-6 years is the norm.

Re: coloring within the lines
Well DD#1 has some fine motor deficits but is 5.5 and is getting better but stays in the lines when she slows down. DD#2 is 3.5 and her teacher says she is doing it now in class. But says she is very ahead with cutting, writing, pasting and painting. She said at the meeting that 4-5 is when most do. I look at the things in DD#1's school and it looks like some K's do it much better than others.
