I am so baffled as to why this is even considered a party theme?

same. I find it offensive just like I would find saying to dress up like a Hasidic Jew or wear blackface. Honestly, it is demeaning to make fun of people like that.

Agreed. Some people just over analyze everything. It's like the movie "joe dirt", that type of thing. Sounds fun. I'd make sure you have some pink flamingos around the yard!

This type of party has been around since my college days. I have been to one and it was a lot of fun. It was more like a hillbilly/red neck theme but basically the same thing. Love Joe Dirt by the way! haha!!

I don't know why everyone is getting so mad? I don't think she was trying to offend anyone.
It's all in good fun, Just like Halloween. People dress up like hill billys, presidents, men dress as women, women dress like men, some are bald, some are bearded women, some are fat or old... I guess you can take everything thing listed as an offensive thing. I am sorry this turned into a debate..seems like everything lately is. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: White Trash party invite wording

I am not going to quote anyone because I realize it's the opinion of many, but I call bullshiitt on "everything is offensive lately."

Not everything is offensive - just insulting words and phrases.

Over time, hearts and minds wise up. We're better today than we were yesterday, so it's only natural that over time more disgusting phrases and words are exposed as offensive.

You know what? If you really think "everything is offensive" these days, maybe you need to evaluate your vocabulary.

Maybe it's not everyone else.

Maybe it's you.

Maybe don't be a jerk.

It's not hard.

Yesterday I saw this thread & knew exactly where it was going to go after the first righteous comment. It’s amazing how many perfect people there are in this world. Have a great party. It’s going to be a blast! I’m a sucker for a fun theme, so I’d search Pinterest & go all out.

No one said anything about perfect. Just not being a person who thinks making fun of poor white people is a fun party theme?

So there are some white people who would be ok being called “white trash”? You wouldn’t be offended at all?

Need some ideas for hubbys 40th bday party invitation wording. I want everyone to wear some sort of white trash/redneck outfit. Any suggestions?

And to answer your question, my husband & I were “white trash” for Halloween years ago. He wore a stained wife beater, dirty jeans, a flannel, trucker hat, and work boots. I wore a fake pregnant belly, pig tails, a dress with pantyhose & open toed shoes. I also stuck a cigarette behind my ear and made sure to carry around a beer all night. I also carried around a baby doll that looked nothing like my husband to make it look like it wasn’t his child.

We won the best costume but I’m also a terrible human being, obviously.

There are plenty of party themes that don't involve mocking people who have less than you.

Honestly, if you'd just said a redneck party, I may not have had a strong reaction, and I hesitated before I said anything, but referring to human beings as trash bothers me.

Karen0119 thank you for sharing that post. It was wonderful and insightful. Another post from that blog has a great quote from one of his students: I’m tired of an America where all the folks I’ve ever loved are dismissed as trash, where people are reduced to something subhuman simply because of where they live.

There must've been some pretty lame costumes at this party if this was the best one there Chat Icon

Re: White Trash party invite wording

I don't think anyone is trying to sound perfect or self-righteous. Just sharing how it's making them feel, or how it's coming across.

If it makes you feel uncomfortable confronting that which makes people feel differently than you, I think it's worth trying to understand it.

Like, why is it funny to have babies from different men?

Why is it funny?

and why are we still calling those tank tops wife-beaters? Is that funny too?

I'm uncomfortable with that. But you don't need to insult me for stating so. And since this is a public forum, you should expect people to share how it's making them feel.

But like, why is this funny?

I'm all for themed out parties. But someone else asked - what are we teaching our kids when we do something like this? That it's ok to make fun of people. That's ok to you.

That's ok to you?

The OP was asking for suggestions on invite wording. Not for approval on the theme of the party.

Whatever theme you decide upon, I hope your DH has an awesome and memorable 40th! Happy Birthday to him!!!

I think parties that like are more that pick up trucks, trucker hats, bud heavys, pigtails with bandanas, American flags and mullets culture. Not really about making fun of poor people. Maybe there is a more PC way to describe it.

After I read this I had to Google this kind of theme and have to say this invite made me laugh out loud:

Comb your mullet and brush your tooth, so and so is turning 40, it's gonna be a hoot!

Maybe the wording would be easier if you picked a more culturally sensitive theme.

That's a relief.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I think sometimes people forget that a "white trash" or "redneck" themed party is just making fun of poor rural people. I grew up with these people. They're hard working decent human beings who don't deserve to be called "trash" or mocked.

I could not agree more.

Quite frankly I think the original poster is "white trash" with this party idea. Shame on you. What are you teaching your kids?

Good point about the kids.

This is just so disgustingly tacky.

If you want big hair, mullets, and flannel call it an 80s party.

Frankly I'm surprised that people on this site are ok with this at all. All of this. Just substitute a Black or Hispanic slang word instead of white trash, everybody would be up in arms. Not sure why it doesn't go both ways. Chat Icon In any case I don't "get" this type of party at all, and yes I know I'm not invited, Thank God, but if I got an invite for this I would think it is stupid and have no idea what to make of it.

It never works both ways. Chat Icon

I've been to this kind of party and it was a blast! DH wore a John Deere tee-shirt with a plaid/flannel vest over that that we made by just cutting the sleeves off a long sleeved shirt. I wore denim overalls with a Nascar tee-shirt underneath and a trucker hat.

I was considering either a down syndrome or cheap Jew themed party for my dh's 40th but the white trash invitation wording is so catchy, I think I'll go with that instead. Pm me if you want to sell your leftover party decor.

Re: White Trash party invite wording

First, I don't believe most people equate "white trash" with poor people, instead with Jerry Springer-style antics. I'm fairly certain the op isn't going to be hanging up pictures of the Depression.

Here are some costumes I've seen worn through the years: geisha, Native American, guido/guidette, hobo (bum), cowboy/cowgirl. This is a legit question: can we not wear these anymore?

A couple of years back on this very site, 4 pages of replies were given to the question "Do you use the term white trash?" Overwhelmingly, people answered yes. Now, people are subject to snide remarks for using the same words. Not educated discourse or enlightenment. Insults. That's what we've come down to. George Jefferson and Archie Bunker probably had more intelligent debates.

I threw my DH a Mad Men party 5 years ago for his 40th. Today, I'd probably be accused of celebrating misogyny.

To the op...enjoy your party!
