It's to see School of Rock, includes a meal at Planet Hollywood and the bus (we live within the 5 boroughs).

I didn't think it was, but everyone I mention it to thinks it is a ton of money.

Trying to get perspective, lol

That doesn’t seem like a lot to get bused into the city, see School of Rock and then eat at a restaurant. But that seems like a ton of money for a school field trip. What happens when a family can’t afford that? Doesn’t it make that student stand out and feel badly/embarrassed?

Reading the title, I was ready to respond - OMG, it's insane for a field trip.

But, for what the trip entails, it's not bad.

The price seems about right for what you are getting. It is about what we pay for our city trips. As far as too much money for a field trip....it's all relative. Each grade goes on the same trip every year so most people know it is coming up and can save if need be. Every grade is not that expensive. If there are some that can truly not afford it, not just that the parent doesn't want to pay, the social worker can get funds from the district to pay or we even had parents set up a "sunshine fund" to supplement. We did not know who was using it, it all went through the social worker.

The trips are always voluntary. And if a student really wants to go but can't afford it, the PTA or administration can dip into school funds to cover it.

The principal also has a fund usually...

I always tell my son's teachers that I am by no means rich, but I will pay for or contribute to another child going if they cannot afford it. We've been in a rough spot financially before and teachers were flexible with me with payments, so I want to pay it forward.

Also the trip is in June and the money is due in December and it's October. So I think (personally) that helps because you can save a couple of dollars a week if need be.

Ugh. I could afford it BUT would be upset about it.
I would want to experience something BIG like that with my kid.
I’d get the tickets, but prefer we’d go together...
Is it a graduation trip?
Or a run of the mill mid year trip?

Re: Is $90 considered a lot for a field trip?

it seems excessive.
schools usually have deals on broadway shows, and buses during the day are free. so unless they are getting a charter bus and going to a saturday night showing and getting a meal with extras.

I don't think i'd send my kid on that field trip. seems like a waste of money to me.

We've already taken him to a Broadway show, so that part doesn't bother me (we did when he was 8, was great!) And we have the option of putting our names in to chaperone

It's in June, the big 5th grade trip

It's a coach bus, not a school bus and they're eating at Planet Hollywood

It's their big 5th grade trip, before the end of the year when they go to 6th grade. Would that change your mind?

Our school is doing this as well with the 5th graders this year but to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its over $125/child.

They did send a survey out to the parents asking if they would be interested in a trip like this and got a big positive response.

Re: Is $90 considered a lot for a field trip?

It's a lot for a class trip.
But not a lot for a trip like that I guess.
And since it's kind of like their "graduation" trip since they are leaving the school next year, I'd be ok with it for just that once

Considering the kind of trip it is and that it’s their graduation trip, I don’t think it’s too expensive.

Yeah I wouldn't be happy if every year had a trip that expensive but a one time thing at the end of elementary school I'd be okay with.

There are plenty of families that are never going to spend the $$$ to take the whole family to see a Broadway show so to give that kid a chance to go (and with financial help from the school if they need) is a great opportunity.

Those are two good points too. I don't think I've paid more than $40 for any trip before. And I think that was two years ago.

I don't think that's a lot for what they get but I think that a field trip like that should be for something special - like 6th grade graduation or 8th grade graduation. It's a lot to ask for just a regular field trip.

I think it's a lot for a school field trip, excessive!! BUT, like others have said, a good deal for what it is. I take my kids to broadway shows all the time and spend that and then some. But through school...and pay that much money. Not a fan. Especially since it excludes a lot of people who can't afford it. And those that have PTA, etc. pitch in...that's a ton of money to pitch in when say 10 kids can't afford it. Our district used to do those big elaborate 5th grade trips. No more though...

For a what's included & it being their big 5th grade graduation trip, I'd be ok with that cost.

Our school does something similar for 6th grade. I think the price is acceptable, if a child can not afford it and the principal is usually aware of their financial situation and arrangements are made.

Our school does this too, for sixth grade only. I think it's a great price for what's included. Our superintendent wouldn't let us go see School of Rock. He's a real stick in the mud!!

Probably because it has curse words in it. Nothing over the top, but I can see why they would say no. We saw it, and LOVED it!!

the fifth grade in our school goes to see a Broadway show each year, too. But they fundraise as a class for it. They have a car wash, and a pancake breakfast (parents cook, kids serve). There are other smaller things as well (bakes sales). This pays for the entire trip.
