Bad parenting - no undies?

My 5yo kindergartener Dd has been pulling at her crotch for about 6mos. I took her to the doctor and she is fine. Seems she doesn’t like undies up against her. I bought three different packs, larger sizes, low rise and traditional and her reaction is the same.

Over the summer she wore hot shorts under her dresses and I realized a few times she snuck hot shorts on w no unides. Recently she begs to not wear them and says she’ll be pulling all day.

So yesterday she wore stretch pants w nothing on under and didn’t pull at herself once that I could see. I plan to try and buy boxer briefs or something for her to try. But in the meantime can I send her to school w leggings on and no undies???

I don't think it's horrible temporarily, but if you can tell she has nothing on, I wouldn't send her to school without. I bought "boy short" style underwear for DD1. It cut down on the pulling a lot.

Bad parenting - no undies?

She's 5, I'd let it go!
Is she against wearing a skirt/dress over the leggings for extra coverage?

My Dd went through a phase like that too with the constant tugging. I tried several different brands and styles of undies before finding one that worked well for her.

I would make her wear undies though. She’ll have to get used to them eventually.

I agree. My daughter is 5 and hates wearing undies too! she is also pulling them or cries every time we change them.. Its exhausting but I just don't think this is something I should let go and let her get her way on. She also does it with socks and I feel like if I allow her to stop wearing underwear then she will get worse with the socks ... then wear does it end? I hate the fight - i usually find my self saying things like "You have to wear underwear. Everyone wears them. Its part of life" lol.
So, I feel for ya!

To school I would make her wear them. At home, nah.

Re: Bad parenting - no undies?

Are our daughters related? My 5 year old dd was driving me nuts as well. Took her to the dr as well and she said she was fine. I tried so many undies. Finally someone suggested Justice for underwear. They are completely seamless and very soft more like adult underwear than straight cotton. My dd loves them and I let her pick them out online they have cute designs. They are pricey but she wears them without complaint now it might be worth a try. They smallest size is 6/7 so they were a bit big but she doesn’t complain. They have bikinis and boy shorts.

So funny because my best friend never wears underwear and never has and when I told her she’s like just like her Auntie!

Also in the middle of the night Every. Single. Night. She takes off her bottoms - whether it’s pj shorts or pants. So I find her in a tee and that’s it lol! So I’ve been encouraging night gowns too.

And yes she usually wears a dress w leggings. But Saturday to her birthday party she didn’t.

Anyone know where I can buy boy shorts? I have a bunch from primary.com but they’re def not undies

Boy cut underwear you mean? They sell them at Target, Walmart, etc. I always see them there in the packages.

My oldest DD didn't wear underwear from Kindergarten thru 5th grade. On the very rare occasion she had to for a dress she wore boy shorts. By 5th grade she heard of a girl getting her period in school and from that day on has worn underwear to school, at home is another story. Honestly I got so much grief from DH and the grandparents about it but it really was not the end of the world in the bigger picture

I tend to agree with this. Unless they are in a skirt or dress, I don't see the big deal.
The pants cover everything anyway

Bad parenting - no undies?

My 7 year old hates underwear and socks.

I don't force her to wear either unless she was in a dress...but then we put bicycle shorts on anyway and no underwear.

Why does she have to? Everyone does not wear underwear and it's not a part of life lol. If it makes her uncomfortable then that's reason enough.

Re: Bad parenting - no undies?

I would never allow that. I think underwear serves a few purposes, and I would not want my child to get used to not wearing them. I would say you have to, sorry if you don't like it but you have to get used to it.

If seams/zippers from her clothing are not irritating her, then there is really no reason she would need to wear underwear. If she is more comfortable without it, then let her go without. Just be aware that her outer clothing will need to be washed after each wear, and she'll be fine!!!

I sometimes feel like it's healthier to NOT wear panties- since your bits and parts can breath!

Of course, if you are wearing spandex pants, this does not apply!

Re: Bad parenting - no undies?

Is it an age thing?

Hailey keeps saying shes itchy. Occasionally she has a rash or she gets TP stuck, but like 40 times a day she grabs herself.

She gets especially annoyed when shes sitting in her carseat and cant do anything about it.

I think as they get older and start having "changes" prior to period time, this would be absolutely gross to have no undies on. Stuff could be soaking through onto her leggings. I would tell her to suck it up, find more comfortable underwear, and go from there. If you give in, then she won't wear them when she NEEDS to.

Have you tried the underwear from Justice? My DDs call it the "comfy undies"!

She just turned 5 so that’s not a concern.

Thanks for suggestions! I’ll check out justice and he boy cut shorts.

Right, my point is, at some point she will need to wear underwear, then won't because she has been allowed to go without up until then Chat Icon

The difference between 5 and 13 is huge. I'm sure she will make her own smart decisions when it comes to panties and periods and not rebel because at 5 her mom didn't force her to wear underwear.

My 5 year old DD has been doing the exact same thing the past few months, it drove me crazy. We tried just about every type of underwear. But she stopped tugging when I got her the Cat and Jack "hipster briefs" from target. I don't know what makes them different, but she doesn't tug or pull. She says they're softer and feel better.

That’s the exact brand and style that worked for my DD too! They’re the only ones I buy for her now. She likes the bikini style too.

Re: Bad parenting - no undies?

My dd is a pain about underwear too...she definitely has some minor sensory issues relating to clothing and stuff...I personally feel that wearing underwear is important at school, etc. so I never even gave that as an option.

My dd likes boyshort or hipsters the best and I always make sure to size up so that they aren't too tight.
