Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
no, you're not a bad mother.
ETA: in fact, it's the kids who never saw alcohol or were never given a little taste or never saw adults enjoy alchol responsibliy are the ones that go crazy in HS and college with drinking. I think if it's supervised and appropriate, it's ok.

Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
That's probably a lot less alcohol than cough medicine.....
I don't see anything wrong with it.
DW knew a family where the 8 yo DS would cruise the tables at a party, and empty everyone's glasses.... THAT was bad parenting! The kid was toasted at every party!

Didn't we all have a sip of our dad's beer when we were younger? Nothing wrong with a taste.

Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
I think you are a great mother to do that, I fully believe that exposure to alcohol when your children are growing up is a good thing. Look at the French...the kids all drink wine from a young age (not like full glasses...) but I think your having a healthy attitude towards booze will show your kids how to have a good attitude towards it.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. The best place for a child to learn how to drink is in the home so that they can handle alcohol appropriately and responsibly when given the opportunity to have it.

No, not at all. Children in european countries regularly sip wine at dinner. And those countries don't have teenage drinking like we do here.

I was allowed to have wine with dinner from the time I was about 9 or so.

Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
I don't think it's a big deal. I rememeber begging my father for sips of beer and being served a small amount of wine on special occasions. I think being less forbidden makes it less exciting as you get older.
But I saw thing on the news that I think it was Nassau country, signed a law that it was illegal to serve minors alcohol in your home.

I let each of my kids taste my Mai Tai last night. They are 14, 12 and 9. I knew they wouldn't like it. They couldn't understand how I liked them.

Same here except I still don't really like the taste now. I don't think you're a bad mother.

Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
if you are a bad mother then you should have called CPS on my mom and dad - they let me have the last sip of beer from my dad's after-work coors when i was 3 years old

this applies more to getting a keg for a graduation party- then giving you own kid a sip of of something
the sad thing is- if we lived in europe- we would not even question this
this country is getting way too up tight for me

Re: NOT PARENTING: am i a bad mother??
I think that is fine. At my wedding, my 13 year old sister had a few sips of champagne as well.
