NYC workers who are on city insurance (NYPD, FDNY, DOE, etc)
Did you get a letter recently regarding your spouse's eligibility? Dh has been on my insurance forever, and now I got a letter asking for more documentation (tax returns, mortgage statement, etc) to verify his eligibility.
Just a little confused about why they need these documents, and I'm a little scared to send stuff like that. They've had our marriage license on file for years and that used to be enough... If anyone else got it, are you as creeped out as I am, or am I overthinking it?

We didn't get anything. I think though sometimes they randomly audit to make sure spouses are still eligible... (i.e. you didn't get divorced and not report it to them etc)

This is normal in the private sector. Companies do audits every few years to make sure spouses and children are insured when they shouldn’t be

My company asks you to verify your insurance yearly for your spouse. Where I work your spouse cannot be on your insurance if they are offered insurance at their job. They audit yearly. I’m on DHs insurance and he works for the railroad. We used to have mine before he got a job with LIRR

My husband is nypd and we've gotten verification letters in the past for myself. The last one was was making sure that I didn't qualify thorough insurance at my job and had to be notarized.

It's funny because I am entitled to insurance at my job but chose not to take it because obviously DH's insurance through NYPD is light years better and cheaper. They only asked once for me to prove that I don't take my job's insurance. I qualify to receive it at my company but opt out. They just needed a letter stating I am not insured under my company's plan.

I think we've gotten it two years in a row. We had to send a copy of our marriage certificate and that sufficed.

That really stinks. Can they really do that? Telling an employee their spouse can't be on their plan if offered insurance at their own job. How do they know your spouse even has a job? What about children?
To the orig poster, yes I just had to fill out verification papers about spouse & children information & fax it to the audit co.

Apparently it is. I just got a new job and can't cover DH because his job offers insurance but it is astronomical. We have no choice but to pay it because he cannot be covered under me.
We didn't realize how expensive (and crappy) his was until we looked into it because he was always under mine. I probably wouldn't have taken the job if I had known.

How do they even verify if his job has insurance or if he has a job to begin with? Sounds insane & confusing to me.
What industry are you in if you don't mind me asking?

I don’t live in NY but my husbands job does the same thing they actually make me pay a monthly surcharge to use his insurance since there is some offered by mine. They made me sign an affidavit. I have no idea how they would check if I said I didn’t work. For me the price is about the same and maybe alittle more but his coverage is much better which is why I pay it.

I was thinking about going on my husband's insurance, but they charge a yearly fee in addition to the premiums f I could get insurance through my job and do not use it and take his.

Re: NYC workers who are on city insurance (NYPD, FDNY, DOE, etc)
The NYS budget required an audit to be done of health insurance eligibility (they do it every couple of years).
NYC is doing the same thing.
They do it every couple of years. The reason they ask for bank statement/mortgage statement instead of just a marriage license is to ensure that it is recent. Someone can submit a marriage license even if they've been divorced for years.
