lap seat or pay for an extra?
DD will be 2 weeks shy of turning 2 years old. Where we are going (chicago), we won't need a car seat. Everything is gonna be by train and we aren't renting a car or anything. If we were bringing the seat, then i would definitely have considered getting the extra seat and just bringing the carseat onto the plane.
Should we do the lap seat and take advantage of not having to pay, or should we just get the extra seat?

Personally I'd get the seat. My DD is that age and there is no way she would sit on my lap for 3 hours.

Re: lap seat or pay for an extra?
We have flown with my LO 4 times as a lap child. After the last flight, never again. We hit terrible turbulence and I was so terrified and my husband was hanging on to him so tightly. I had the worst thoughts while it was happening , scariest time ever

I would pay. My kids will be 1 next month and I think they would be terrors on the plane unless we fed them the entire time. Also, I feel for safety reasons that a car seat is best. I would bring a car seat regardless of age

lap seat or pay for an extra?
Just wanted to add we've flown twice with her already this past summer and she did OK on the plane (flights were to jamaica and NC so they weren't very long). She gets a little car sick, so she threw up one way from jamaica and one way for the NC trip. But at 1 year old, I will still able to give her some formula and get her to take a nap on the plane. I am not sure that will be the case with a 2 year old haha

DS will be 18 months in february when we go to florida and we got him a seat....easier to strap in the car seat and let him sleep.

I would sit her on my lap. I feel like she may end up there anyway so I wouldn't want to waste money on a seat if I didn't have to.

Re: lap seat or pay for an extra?
I’ve done both. No right answer. With more kids, I lapped til the end to save the $ on that ticket.

Re: lap seat or pay for an extra?
It's not a long flight at all and as you said she's been fine on your lap before. I say save the money one more time and sit her on your lap. We sometimes book the window and aisle seat and lucked out that no one sat between us and were able to get 3 seats. Doesn't always work out that way, but you never know.

Only you know your child but I will say Chicago is such an easy flight I'd probably do lap. Its like a 2 hour flight. during rush hour The taxi ride into downtown chicago is longer than the flight.

That's a good idea I will probably do that.

Re: lap seat or pay for an extra?
My LO sits well for me and since Chicago isn't a long flight, I would probably do a lap seat.

Re: lap seat or pay for an extra?
I will never ever have my child on my lap. They always have their own seat and are either in their own car seat or the CARES harness when a little older. I think the faa is making a huge dangerous mistake allowing lap infants.

I think if you look at the statistics of people injured by turbulence each year...it’s about 50. Over half of which are flight crew. About 1.5 million people fly every day. So the odds of injury are statistically so so so small. Our kids are more likely to be injured playing on the playground.
