We are thinking of scratching the idea of giving DS (6) xbox. We already have it (promotion when we bought our tv) but feel he's still too young. BUT...he loves playing his games on the phone. We thought about a tablet but I'm not too thrilled with the idea that so many apps are not secure and I can't always monitor what the pop ups ask, kwim?

So we were thinking nintendo ds but I wanted to get some ideas here.

DS has a kindle and a Nintendo DS2. He plays with them both and they do different things. He is a BIG Mario fan, so we have to go nintendo. We bought the 2DS because it was like $100 cheaper than the 3DS and they do nor recommend the 3DS for under 7 due to the 3D nature of it. Also you can play 3DS games on the 2DS.
With the kindle, you can turn on the parental controls and there will be no pop ups and to get to certain places you will need a password. That's what we do and it is not a problem.
But he still tries to grab my phone all the time. He just always wants what he can't have and I think there is no way around that.

My 8 yo son just got the Nintendo Switch for his birthday and he really likes it. He also has an Ipod Touch - occasionally plays games but he mostly watched YouTube Kids (and we use it to text him).

I would just get a DS. We have the switch and it's way huge IMO to play strictly as a handheld. Plus DS games are cheaper

My boys both have 3 DS and love them.

DS 1 got an XBox for his 7th b-day and loves it too.

My 7 yo twins and my 5 yo son all have 3DS's and love them. They have also been playing Xbox since the twins were 5 and they love that as well. There are many kid friendly games.
