Grieving taxes
So the other post got me thinking- how do you grieve your taxes yourself? If there an advantage to hiring someone to do it over doing it yourself?

apparently it's not that difficult to do, however I feel like grieving with a company will result in a higher tax break.
the most successful firms are rated high because they're politically connected from what I understand.
I saved 30-something percent (I think it was 33%) my first year. It was about 3k. Yes I had to pay 40% of that as my fee, but if I don't need to pay that in subsequent years it's worth it IMO. I am not convinced I would have saved that much if I had done it myself. I only know two people who do it themselves and they didn't do as well as we did, but aside from those two I don't know anyone who does it themselves

Join Jeff Gold's group on FaceBook and do it yourself. It is super easy!! I grieved with a firm for 3 years because I didn't know any better and paid them over $1500. I also grieved for my parents last year and saved them $2400, all of which they get to keep.

Grieving taxes
We have grieved ourselves for 2 years and gotten nothing. And my husband even went to a seminar at the library about it. We are having a company grieve for us this year and from what we read they tend to have better luck. In our mind giving them 40% of any savings is still more than we’ve been getting.

You should use Jeff Gold's firm. He charges a flat fee of $250.

Something to be aware of:
"PLEASE NOTE FURTHER - Our fee is fully earned upon the filing of your tax grievance. Our Fee does not include the filing of a Small Claims Petition (“SCAR”) in the event the grievance is unsuccessful. If you wish to file for SCAR review, we will recommend attorneys that do that work."
Jeff Gold is charging $250 for filing a piece of paper you can file yourself for free. What happens after that is that ARC (the assessment review commission) reviews the property and decided whether or not to make an offer. If they make an offer, you get a lower assessment and Gold makes $250. If they don't make an offer, you get nothing and Gold makes $250. You then have to decide whether or not to actually pursue this matter further through the courts at which time, Jeff Gold will refer you to an attorney who will charge you a fee of between 331/3% - 50% of your tax refund/savings. You will still have to pay Jeff Gold his $250 fee.
The offer that comes from ARC is not a "negotiated" offer. No one appears and presents evidence of any kind. It's a unilateral offer made by the County. You can always counter (but 99% of tax reduction agencies do not counter) - they accept what ARC offers and make $$$.
Honestly, it's a shady business. Either do it yourself or hire an attorney/law firm who has to follow ethical guidelines.

Yes - the process is different in Suffolk. The basic, file a grievance/file a petition is the same, but in Suffolk you file against the Town (not the County), the protest periods are different, the ratios are different, the court system is set up differently, etc.
You can still do it yourself if you want. If you want to do it yourself, start by looking on your town's website. The offices of the assessors at the town are generally very helpful.

We are in Suffolk, Town of Islip. I had attempted to grieve our taxes when we first purchased our home. It was denied and I missed the appeal time frame.

We bought our house in 2016 (Bellmore) and the prior owner had never grieved (tenants were living there for yrs), so when we looked to grieve - I initially planned to do them myself but when I went to Jeff Goldf's FB page to do them - I realized there is a lot of calculations involved and it all comes down to choosing comparables.
So we ended up just using Jeff Gold for grieving and I am glad we did because he chose 4 comparable properties that never showed up on the MLS searches I did, plus the percentage values he used were different than what I had. I am glad we used him because we ended up saving almost $6K after we won our grievance. He is a former SCAR/Assessor so he knows his stuff. I will prob use him again (its $250 for first timers and I think as a repeat client the fee drops to $200).

Grieving taxes
We saved 25% by grieving ourselves with Jeff Gold's help. Will see how it goes this year. Thankful we did considering the new tax laws.
