Maybe it's the kind of rice you're choosing? Are you rinsing the rice? I've read differing opinions on that but i never do.
This has been my favorite recipe lately and it's different than most others I've tried in terms of the technique. https://www.skinnytaste.com/arroz-congri-cuban-rice-and-black-beans/

Re: rice and beans
What kind of rice & beans are you making? Rice and beans together in on pot? Yellow or white rice?
If its soupy you may be putting too much water or oil. Let the water boil with the rice before lowering it down to a simmer. Also don't mix the rice too much, you have to let it sit and leave it be. For yellow rice, its 1.5 cups water for every cup of rice, for white it's 2cups water for every cup of rice. If beans are separate I add potatoes to to thicken the sauce but thats Spanish style rice and beans.
ETA: also may be invest in a rice cooker. People swear by it for making rice.

Re: rice and beans
its the beans that are soupy, sorry i didnt clarify; i'm making boil in bag brown rice and adding. so the bean mixture has too much water. I'm not using canned beans. i'm soaking overnight, then cooking as directed in the recipe. I've used black beans and kidney beans, same problem.
