Has anyone been suggested to hold you DC back for K but didn't?

My DS gets services, OT SIET and Speech. He turned 4 mid November.

The CPSE coordinator went to see him in his pre-k this week and told me I have two options

one let him start K but he will be in a 15-1 class witha an aide assigned to him.

Or have him repeat prek again. Where he will continue to get speech and OT but not a SIET

She is suggesting repeat since he has a late birtday.

I will admit DS is struggling with peeing on the potty we have accidents everyday most days mutliple times a day.

I do see him improving in speech.

She told me I should really decide by April.

I am torn right now. I know I still have a few months. I know holding him back would probably be good but I feel like who knows how he will be by September and I do feel bad not having him move up. I won't lie I was really counting on not paying for full time daycare anymore which I know is a selfish reason to even consider when making the decision.

I heard that in school they no longer let your child fail and get left back. Is this true? If I did send him to K and he really struggled would they just push him through or would they suggest he repeats a grade?


Just wondering if anyone was suggested to hold their DC back but didn't and sent them anyway? Any regrets?

Will the school district use holding him back as a way to later on deny services? I know this has happened before. I would be incredibly careful.

He is a student with a disability. Time alone is not going to help him. Intervention via specialists will. I would go for the 15:1 Kindergarten classroom and the related services. Holding him back in a general ed PreK class with NO special ed support, only related services doesn’t sound like a great plan for your child.

You want him in the most enriching/supportive environment with professionals trained to help him acquire both academic and developmental skills. His education will be individualized to meet all of his needs.

At the school age level students have access to many different types of professionals that can support students functional independence in the school setting. If he goes to a general Ed PreK he will only have acres to the PreK teacher and the classroom aide.

They did not suggest that I hold my daughter back but she also had speech and OT and was academically behind. Also had and still has frequent accidents. Developmentally she is just immature all around. She is in 2nd grade and I do still have some regrets for not holding her but ultimately she is doing okay now. She does get pulled out for reading, math and speech thou and an OT pushes in once a month. She just recently was identified for reading help and I can tell already that it is helping tremendously. I have also been told by many people who had similar children that are much older now that they all catch up and it all evens out, just because she is struggling now it is not any indication of her future success. not sure if this helps you but this has been my experience. As for the accidents, you might want to try bringing him to a urologist. My daughter is on medication now and it has helped tremendously!!!

If you haven’t... I’d set up an appointment with your school district. Our has changed the way they do things recently and, yes, kids who get services start on time and it is somehow linked to preserving their services. It may help you make your decision.

Me too. I think this is great advice.
To answer your other question about holding back- repeating K does happen but it's rare. Since your son has a disability, they most likely would not recommend having him repeat K.

who should I be setting up an appointment with? The person who suggested this to me is from the school district. She is the head of the CPSE.

The chairperson of the CPSE will be chairing the annual review/transition (to Kindergarten) meeting. If you have any questions that person would be the one to speak with.

I couldn't agree with this more! My dd's preK teacher really pushed to hold her back. But we got good advice like above and they were 100% right. My dd wasn't getting as much help as she needed in the general preK with services. Its a whole new world now that she is in school all day with special ed teachers and even peers that also struggle a little. That was a huge thing with her in the general preK - all the other kids were "getting it" and she would shut down. She has blossomed this year and even enjoys helping her friends who start to struggle. She is in a 15:1:1 and it has been a great fit for her. She is doing so well that they want to put her into inclusion next year and although i am happy - I also think I will miss the 15:1 class!
