Decks?
Who has a deck? We're redoing our this spring. What's yours made of? I was thinking of Trex but I'm not sure if there's something better out there. Any thoughts?

Re: Decks?
Definitely go for Trex or some other composite. Having a wood deck is a HUGEEEEEE PIA. It needs to be stained constantly. It rots. Boards need to be replaced. It ends up looking like crap. The maintenance is insane.
If we had to do it again we would 100% go with Trex or another composite.
It's a lot more money- but worth it in the long run IMO

Agree with this 1000%. Our wood deck is a huge PIA.

Decks?
We did Trex about 2 years ago and are pretty happy with how it turned out and how it has held up so far.

I agree 100% both our houses had decks and they were a PIA to maintain. We just ripped ours off this past summer and went with a patio. I couldn't be happier. I am not a fan of decks, I don't like being up high where my neighbors can see what we are doing over the fence either.

We had ours done with Evergrain (similar to Trex). Had it for 4 summers and it was great, but just sold the house, so I won't know how it holds up n the future. (There are pics in my album)

This! Could not agree more about the maintenance. Our deck is huge, over 1,000 square feet. We bought it with the deck already in place so I'm not sure what type of wood it is. I'd love to replace with trex but for a deck our size it would be a fortune and we have been debating expanding the house off the back so we don't want to spend that money to rip it down in a few years.

we have a wood deck and love it! I don't really find it to be such a PIA. We have lived at the house for 10 years and never had a problem with rotting or broken boards.

I would agree with this. We have a wood deck, at least 5 years old, that is when we bought the house. We don't do anything to it and we have not needed to replace anything. Now, our pavers are in terrible condition. They have shifted so much in 5 years. Nightmare.

We have the Lowes equivalent to Trex becuase it was cheaper. I still like it, no fading. Happy we went with it

You don't have to stain it? The stain generally needs to be redone every few years (sometimes almost every year) because the winter weather degrades it and it starts peeling, fading etc Unless you use a solid stain- which is more like a paint- and holds up better

We have done nothing. I don't know if we were supposed to stain it but we have not. No need to really.

Re: Decks?
My parents had a wood deck for almost 30 years before they had to replace a single board. It's still in great shape. My dad power washes it once in a while, that's about it.

Re: Decks?
I think it also depends on the wood. Our deck is cedar and while it was beautiful when first built, (and smelled amazing!) it is a very soft wood. It's more prone to rot, bug damage, water damage, etc
The boards DH replaced he replaced with pressure treated wood which is much more durable and not prone to bugs eating it etc. Once stained it looked the same as the cedar boards.
We also have a loop lock cover on our pool that anchors into the wood so the tension of that cover pulling on the wood all winter is what causes the warping and damage to boards.
In general though, if money was no object, I would never build a wood deck. To me, composite just looks sooooo much better too. There is a reason why it's so much more money.

Staining and/or sealing genearlly protects the wood from UV rays, water damage etc. Something like Thompson's water seal. When they built our deck that is what they told us. The wood shouldn't be left naked when exposed to the elements. Your deck might have been sealed at one point
