Mail for previous tenant?

I am temporarily living in an apartment, in a complex, where mail is delivered through a mail slot in the front door of each apartment. I've never lived anywhere like this before - where mail is not delivered in a mailbox. Today I received mail for the previous tenant that looks pretty important - from DMV. (I've received other mail for her, but nothing that looked important - mostly junk mail). There is nowhere to leave mail for the mailman. What should I do with it?

Can you take it to the post office? Just drop it in the mailbox saying return to sender.

When I lived in that type of situation with a mail slot, I would close my door and leave the mail sticking out of the slot. The mailperson always took it .

Mail for previous tenant?

you can write on the envelope something like moved left no forward address.
i forget exactly what they said to write on it but then you just put it back in the mailbox and they hold it then toss it eventually.

I always write on the envelope "Please forward to new address" and put it back in the mailbox for the mailman to take it.

But there is no mailbox - that's why I'm asking. My mail is delivered through a mail slot in the door.

It's just that there is no where to actually put the mail - no mailbox, only a mail slot in the door

That's where you put outgoing mail (I have a slot in my door).
Also, if there is a barcode printed on the envelope, cross it out or the mail will just keep coming back to you (told to me by a postal worker at work).

That's a good idea. If I just put it in the mail slot, I think my dog my knock it out - the slot is just the right height for him to "peek through" when he stand up - I think he thinks it's his own peephole, even though the flap prevents him from actually seeing anything. But he sticks his nose in there all the time, so I'm afraid he would push out any mail I left stuck in there

I have done that ( also wrote Not at this address on it) or I have written that & put it in a blue mailbox in the neighborhood.
