Those taking plaquenil

Hi ladies, just looking for some input. My rheumatologist just started me on plaquenil 3 days ago. He wanted me to start it about 6 months ago but I've been pushing it off. We plan on doing another round of IVF for baby #2 In the next few months and I'm just really nervous to be on this while pregnant. However, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place because I need to take my health into consideration as well. I've been researching the plaquenil and although there have been a small number of studies on humans that haven't shown any fetal issues while on it during pregnancy, there have been animal studies that have shown potential, hearing, vision and neurological disturbances. It remains in your body for 8 months so If I plan on stopping it I need to do so now. The FDA hasn't even categorized it because they say that it has to be given on a risk/benefit reason which is under the discretion of the physician. And it passes through breast milk so some studies say it isn't recommended to breast feed while on it and others say to speak to your doctor. I'm just wondering if any of you ladies out there have been on this drug while pregnant and what your experiences were on it? Any adverse outcomes with the pregnancies/babies? TIA.

Hi. My RE prescribes plaquinil often to his patients. Many ladies on my REs facebook group are on it. He said I could take that or Prograf. I had already been on Prograf so I chose to stay on that. PM me any questions. Best of luck.

What's the thought process behind your RE prescribing prograf? That's an anti-rejection drug that people take when they have had organ transplants. I've never heard of it being used in the fertility world. The reason why my rheumatologist prescribed plaquenil is because I have lupus antibodies and for the past 8 months my levels have been on the rise and I've been experiencing symptoms. So, in order to prevent my lupus from progressing further he wants me started on plaquenil.

I was on plaquenil and prograf at the same time as prescribed by my RI. Never had any success, but I know he prescribes to a lot of his patients with no adverse outcomes.

And they remain on it while pregnant? And the babies haven't experienced any issues that you know of?

So your body doesn't reject the embryo. Some stop it at positive beta and some stay on it a little longer. I haven't heard of any effects on it from the groups I'm in. I'm in a reproductive immuniology FB group that talks about a lot of this and many different medications. Also KK in Chicago keeps her patients on Prograf longer. I'll have to ask around about taking Plaquinil while pregnant.
