Ranch. I HATE, HATE, HATE it!!! Never wanted one for every reason that I currently hate it and want out!
I cannot stand having everything on one floor. I hate when you have people over that you have to clean every single thing immaculately because people can see every inch of your house. I want bedrooms on the 2nd floor away from the common areas. I can't wait to sell and get a two story home.
And I also hate that there is nowhere to escape. I hear everything that goes on in the whole house. When I am working from home, I hear the TV blaring, my DH doing work around the house, everything. In the summer I actually go in the yard to work to escape it. In the winter- I'm trapped.
I don't have a basement either so that just compounds it. Ranches really suck. Unless you have issues with walking stairs I guess.
In the new half of our house, all of the interior walls are insulated. A little extra cost for the build, but not much, but it makes the house SOOO much quieter. I barely hear a sound, even if DC are making a racket upstairs.

DH just demoed the hall bathroom and he put thicker insulation in all the walls. They had some insulation in their but it was old and crappy. If we ever did major work, I'd definitely do the same. You can hear EVERYTHING that goes on even 3 rooms away!

Re: What Style Home do you own?
Colonial 6bedroom 4.5 bath.
Pros-updated inside. Insulated well Maintained home. It was built in the 1800s and you would never know it.
Cons-when something needs repair it’s crazzzzzzy expensive. I also wish we had an open layout but the rooms are all big enough where it doesn’t really matter.

Re: What Style Home do you own?
We bough an expanded ranch. Love it. The layout works for us because the kitchen is in the center and the living room gives a good flow to access all areas (different doorways).
I grew up in a colonial and hated all the stairs and feeling of isolation depending on what side of the house you were in. We have 3 bedrooms/2 baths and a full finished basement with hi-hats and small windows on each end. Our basement works as a separate work space/guest bedroom, “relax” area. When company comes over, we simply close the bedroom doors.

Re: What Style Home do you own?
Split. There are a dozen possible split styles. I love our layout: walk into the foyer, LR to the right, DR behind it, kitchen next to the DR. 3 BR 2 baths up half a flight of stairs. Den & a half bath is half a flight down from the LR, and a finished basement is half a flight down from the den. We have sliding doors off the kitchen to a deck and the yard.
It feels open but it’s not one of those houses with no walls. I’m a fan.

This is our same exact house minus the deck and I love it. Open enough without being too open and separated enough without being too separated.

Exactly. I can make dinner and know what's going on upstairs. In fact, I can see into one bedroom from my couch.

What Style Home do you own?
We bought a Cape and dormered it to make a Colonial. I love my house so much more now.
We have 5 BR, 2 baths and a basement with a large yard.

What Style Home do you own?
I have a salt box! It’s so unique and different and I love it. Tudors are my favorite, my grandparents had one while I was growing up. My parents have a ranch, my dad calls it a crown ranch??? I love it! It’s huge and opened and if your on one end of the house you can’t hear anything on the other end. The basement is gigantic. Before it was redone we used to roller blade in it. They have the washer dryer moved to right off the kitchen so you don’t have to go into the basement. It’s so opened and everything flows. Sometimes I fantasize they give it to me lol.

Re: What Style Home do you own?
We have a wide line high ranch. Right now we basically have it split into 2 ranches. Upstairs has a kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom and 3 bedrooms. Downstairs has a kitchen/living room combo, 2 huge bedrooms, bathroom and laundry room. For us it works great. We live upstairs and my parents downstairs. Only thing I wish it had was a basement.
I know many people don’t like high ranches. I grew up in one so I’m use to it m. When we were looking to buy we looked at every type of home and I really like colonial the best but that wouldn’t have worked with my parents. I also found that with high ranches you get the most living space for your dollar. I also noticed they were the least likely to have been remodeled. We have gutted almost the entire house now and I really love it. We changed a lot of the choppy aspects of the high ranch and made it very open concept.

Colonial and I LOVE it. I can only think of pros.
Also not that this is standard in all colonials but we have a large basement with a laundry room so the parts or my house that have the potential to be messiest is out of the way.

Re: What Style Home do you own?
We have a Colonial, which was top of my list. I like that all of the bedrooms are upstairs. The downstairs/living areas are spacious. We have a good size EIK, den, formal LR and formal DR, plus a 350 sqft FL room.
I personally do not like Capes (on LI anyway), splits, or high ranches. I grew up in a high ranch and we have a Cape on Cape Cod. Our Cape Cod Cape isn't like Capes here on LI--it has a different layout than most of the Capes I've been in here.
