5 year old with "goopy" and teary eyes

My 5 year old woke up this morning and seemed like he has a cold and his eyes are goopy and tearing. They seem to be getting a little red because he's rubbing them. Are we allowed to put Visine in his eyes?

Sounds like pink eye. I would call the doctor, they can usually just call in drops.
Pink eye can manifest from a head cold.

It sounds like a pink eye due to his cold virus, totally normal and I wouldn’t use visine. It’ll most likely dissapear on its own in a matter of days. If it really bothers him, I’d have him put warm tea bags over his eyes.

If it's pink eye, is that something he needs to see the doctor for? Isn't pink eye contagious?

It's extremely contagious. It could be allergies, but I would take him to the doctor. And believe me, I'm the last person to rush to the doctor.

It is contagious just like a cold would be. Therefore I’d not send him to school. I also would not see a doctor because they’ll not prescribe any medication to cure it (because it’s due to a cold virus). The best u can do to prevent spreading it, is to have him wash his hands throughly and often, also not to share anything that would become in contact with his eyes. Other than that, just allow a few days, and the pink eye will disappear just like the rest of his cold symptoms Chat Icon

If you go to the dr they can give you a prescription For eye drops. After a day of eye drops it’s no longer contagious.

Bacterial pinkeye needs antibiotic drops. Viral pinkeye will just go away on its own. But I would keep him home as long as it’s goopy

Sounds like pink eye which is contagious. Don’t let him rub his eyes, wash his hands often. I’d take him to a dr to see if he can get drops to clear it up.

It sounds like pink eye, and if it's bacterial pink eye which is the kind I usually get, it will NOT go way on it's own and needs antibiotic drops. Serious damage can be done if left untreated.

Sounds like pink eye so I would go to the dr. Anything with eyes worries me, so i would get it checked out regardless.

Re: 5 year old with "goopy" and teary eyes

I have had pink eye several times and always got drops.
One time it was viral and the drops didn't help, but the eye doctor gave me some different drops to help with the inflammation in my eye,.
It was horribly bad.
It lasted over 2 weeks!

I wouldn't fool around with it- just see a doctor. If it's bacterial it NEEDS the drops

My doctor told me the best way to tell if its pink eye is if you wipe the goop away and if comes back then its pink eye.

You shouldn't send to school till you see the doctor and get eye drops. My dr never just calls in drops I have to go in and see him to confirm
