8 year olds?
my DS is 7.5 he's in a Graco Nautilus high back booster, using the car seat belt. or sometimes he sits in our BRitax frontier with the car seat belt. he's on the small side, so I'm keeping him in the high back for a while longer i think.

High back booster with the car seat belt
Same

Same and my son will be 9 soon. He is also smaller for his age. A few of his best friends are really big and in no car seats so I drive them to places, but if his friend's parent's drive we put in the booster. He's not even 4 feet yet and about 46 pounds.

I think the requirement for no booster at all is 4'9" right? I feel like DD will be in one until she is ready to drive on her own in that case because she is so tiny LOL

Re: 8 year olds?
He’s still in a 5 point harness (Britax frontier). He fits well but is skinny.
Is a high back booster safer than a backless booster? I’m thinking about the next step...

I don't think it's safer per se- all boosters achieve the same thing- positioning them so the seat belt hits them in the right place to avoid seat belt related injuries (which can be catastrophic) in a crash. The high back just keeps them more upright. If they are able to sit properly and support themselves, then the low back is fine. I just like the high back because i feel it keeps her more in line. When switching from a 5 pt harness, I feel it takes them a while to get use to sitting properly so I feel the high back helps with that.

If you are considering pulling your child out of car seat all together you should check to see if they pass the 5 steps. Most 8 year olds don't.

This right here from this link:
the seatbelt will be on their soft abdomen, above their hip bones. In a crash, this can result in seat belt syndrome, a serious injury to internal organs that occurs when the lap portion of the belt basically doesn’t stop until it hits the spine in the back.
I saw a horrific story once about a girl who wasn't in a booster and should have been. She was nearly cut in half by the seat belt. It scared the shit out of me. If that belt is not hitting them in the right place, it's more dangerous than if they aren't wearing it at all.
When a person is big enough, a seat belt does an excellent job of protecting her in a crash. When your tween is not yet big enough, the seat belt works against her, causing injuries instead of preventing them.

My son is turning 9 in August. He's been without a booster for easily a year already.
