Racial slang and talk in schools

I am trying to figure out if this is common all over or a Queens/NYC thing, mainly referring to middle and high school level. Do you find that kids are freely using the N word to call each other? Both in a "bro" kinda way and other ways, also calling white kids crackers ect.. Just an overall constant use of racial slurs...

For background I am in Queens and my DDs are in a NYC public school that is very diverse. Also I am white and my DH is Indian. My DD in 8th grade looks 100% white and is often ridiculed for talking or being "so white" or called a "cracker". DD is 5th grade and appears 'tan' but tells me very similar stories going on with other kids. Also the use of the N word as common language is totally out of hand between 5-8th grade. It is not primarily being said by African american kids either, it seems most brown kids (Hispanic, Indian ect) are using it.

Anyway I am disgusted by all of it but wonder if this is a city thing or happening all over?

No I don't think I have ever heard racial slang used in our district. We are in Nassua but close to the queens border.

Re: Racial slang and talk in schools

VERY normal in my school district although it always made me uncomfortable as a student, and even more so now that I'm an adult. It is super common though. I live in a very diverse school district.

Re: Racial slang and talk in schools

We live in Manhattan, DS is in 7th grade in a public school, and not the norm here.... I'm latina and DH is white, very diverse school and I haven't heard about it. Although, in reviews I've read online from an 8th grader from our school last year, he said it was common, so maybe depends on the grade and the kids? (I asked DS when I read those reviews and he said it wasn't the case on his experience) Chat Icon

Yes I used to work in a high school in Queens and every single day I'd hear exactly what you described. I hated it.
