Deck vs Patio
I am trying to decide whether to put in a patio or deck. I quoted a paver patio and it will run about 5k. Does anyone know how much a small wood deck costs? I am assuming it will be double that. If you had a deck done and are happy with it can you refer me to the company who did it? Thanks!

Re: Deck vs Patio
No recs as I am not on LI.
Something to think about in your yard which may help you decide is drainage. I have a small deck and also a small slate patio which DH and I put in ourselves. We live on the downside of a hill and the water often pools on the patio. Just something to keep in mind if your yard does not drain well- a deck might be a better option.

Re: Deck vs Patio
I would say a patio because the maintenance on a wood deck is awful. Unless you can afford to get a Trex deck that is, but that will probably run you more than a patio

Thanks. Im leaning towards the patio, and then possibly doing one of those half in/half out pools with a small deck on it. Just cant do that right away -- im sure i need to save another 40k for it LOL

Re: Deck vs Patio
I don’t know how large your patio or deck is. We just did a huge paver patio 22 x 20 and a large walkway. We paid $9,800. Most of the quotes we got for pavers were in this range. We also get quotes for decks the cheapest was 10k all the way up to 16k. We went with pavers and I do like but I would have liked a deck more.

Deck vs Patio
We went with a paver patio because I felt is offered more privacy then an elevated deck and was less maintenance.

Deck vs Patio
I like both but in my mind I think it would depend on your house. I do not like walking down steps to get outside to the use the BBQ, etc. So if your back door was ground level, then a patio. If you would need steps to get out the door then a deck.

Re: Deck vs Patio
We had a deck and dh literally just finished replacing it with pavers. Our deck was only about 6 inches off the ground so no steps are needed. We tossed all the ideas of just replacing the existing deck, doing treks, and pavers. The main reason we picked pavers is because we couldn't stand the amount of bugs and snakes we had living under the deck. It was a breeding ground for everything in the summer and fall! I now LOVE our pavers! And I'm hoping for less critters this year!

Re: Deck vs Patio
Not sure if you asked this but patio not a deck! Decks can a) increase your taxes because they are attached to the house b) decrease privacy c) number one issue to me is insects will make hives/nests under a deck and ANIMALS or RODENTS will live under your deck.
It's a no brainer to me.

Re: Deck vs Patio
We have a patio. Not sure how much it cost because it was here when we bought the house. A good friend of mine just installed a deck. I believe she used Trek decking and it cost her $25k.
