Thin hair

So because of over processing when I was young and also from various medications over the years for my Crohn's disease, my hear is horribly thin. It is curly and I never straighten it because it would be so flat and you can se some of my scalp. The front and crown are especially thin and it makes me so self conscious. I only wear y hear certain ways in an effort to hide it. It makes me so sad and insecure. I'd love to just wear my hair down and not worry about it. Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations for things I can do for this? I've tried things like shampoos but it hasn't helped. I thought about some kind of extensions but I'm afraid it will damage the hair I do have. I also take Biotin. I wish there was a magic pill! Help?

Re: Thin hair

Do you have thin spots where your scalp is showing?
If so I hear Topix is great.
What kind if vitamin are you taking? Just straight biotin?

Re: Thin hair

I have really thin (but straight hair) to the point where I have to spray sunblock on the front of my hair in order not to burn during the summer.

I find taking collagen pills helps to strengthen it a bit. I don't really have too much new growth, but what I do have is a bit thicker so it covers my bald spots more. It does take a few months to really see a difference.

Re: Thin hair

Have you seen a dermatologist ?
There may be something they can give you to help.

I know you said you take biotin - but how much? The hair skin and nails vitamins have 5k of biotin in it

Viviscal is supposed to work good. You can get it off amazon. I know someone who was able to take out her hair extensions after being on it for 9 mos.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Chat Icon

I was recently diagnosed with alopecia and it sounds similar to what you have going on. I would recommend going to a dermatologist. They will probably tell you to get blood work done to check your iron, ferratin levels and also thyroid. They can also do a scalp biopsy which is what confirmed the type of alopecia I have.

Some types of alopecia are reversible - some are not. In the latter case you can only hope to slow or stop the loss. Dr's sometimes prescribe steroids, either oil at the scalp or shots.

As someone mentioned above, Toppik is a good powder keratin "filler" you can put at a visible scalp line. It does help if the loss isn't too bad. I use this.

You can also consider a hair topper of either synthetic or human hair, but that's a big step for a lot of people (me included).

I take daily: biotin, Oscal, iron, collagen, tumeric, testoquench, fish oil, and "hair skin & nails" from douglas labs. Also, I use Pura D'Or shampoo and serum. It helps boost volume a little.

Re: Thin hair

I have heard of people recommending Jamaican Castor Oil. You an purchase it on amazon or Walmart.com. My grandmother and eyebrow lady both mention this is to me. I bought and applied it to my roots and slept with it over night. I was told to do this 2xper week. Try it.. you never know!

Re: Thin hair

Before you try anything, go to a dermatologist to find out why you are losing your hair and what if anything will work to restore your hair.

Re: Thin hair

have you tried or heard of fascia blasting? I have just started this for my nerve damage on my arms, but the groups on fb I belong to have shown improvement for hair regrowth. I plan to try it on my DH since he has a spot forming at his crown. While I do have Crohns, I’ve only been recently diagnosed, so I don’t have this symptom yet, but I truly feel that blasting has improved my other symptoms!

Re: Thin hair

If it’s not something medical, I agree with going to your doctor first, keranique works. My hair is still thin but it’s growing in in places. My sides and top, specifically. It’s not cheap but it does work. It’s frustrating I know. Hope you get some answers
