Anyones kid ever a ring bearer?

A cousin of my husband just asked if my 4.5 year old son could be the ring bearer in her wedding.
The ceremony will be a full mass.
Has anyone been through this? Did your child this age sit through the mass quietly (I have a hard time picturing my son doing this) or did you have to take him outside etc?
Kind of dreading this!

Re: Anyones kid ever a ring bearer?

Both of my grandsons have been ring bearers twice. The older one was 1 1/2 the first time, and 5 the second time. He sat quietly both times. The younger one was a ring bearer at 1 and 1 1/2, and will be again this December at 2 1/2. He did pretty well both times. At 1 1/2 was a little tougher, but he is used to sitting quietly in church. At 4 1/2 you should be fine.

My oldest son was a ring bearer twice. Once when he was a little over two and the second time right when he turned 3. Both times he was very good. I bribed him with M&M's and it kept him quiet.

Yes a ring bearer at 4... but not a full mass. Seriously, it’s hard even for adults to sit through a full mass. My son presented the ring and went back to join us. He enjoyed watching the wedding and remembered it fondly. DD fell asleep (she was 2). I’d bring a whole bunch of coloring stuff and those water wow books in a bag just in case.

My son was 2 and it was a full mass. He walked down the aisle and then I grabbed him on the side. He sat with me where I had some quiet toys and candy lol. Then when they started walking back out at the end I ran him up there with the groomsmen and he walked back out down the aisle.

Haha toys and candy are a great idea. I didnt think about bringing food in but that usually helps keep him quiet.
Thanks for the advice!

My son just turned 3 when he did it last year. He was fine. I think I let him play games on my phone when he got a little fidgety.

mine was, right before he turned 4... but it wasn't a full mass. He did well, and he's SUPER energetic!!! LOL i was also in the wedding, so my in laws and husband had him during the ceremony. I bought a new small little toy for him, so i told him ahead of time if he came down the aisle nicely, grandma and grandpa would let him see what his new toys was. so that was fun for him. I also packed a few other quiet toys, and a couple snacks. LOLLIPOPS are key!! HAHA they keep them quiet for awhile, and don't leave crumbs or anything LOL he also likes those water wow books from Melissa and Doug, too.

DS was 1.5 when he was a ring bearer. I was in the bridal party and DH wasn't so he held him in the back until it was time for him to walk down the isle. Once my husband put him down he ran up and down the isle clapping and laughing - then my mom grabbed him and tried to hold onto him during the ceremony. He wouldn't sit still so my DH hung out with him in the back until it was over.

My oldest has been a ring bearer twice now. One he was a little over 2 and the other, a little over 3. The first one, he did great. He sat with family (my husband and I were involved in the wedding) and had cousins there and they all entertained each other. When he was 3, he was expected to stand at the front the entire time (which was asking too much, as the bride admitted afterwards. She hadn't thought about that ahead of time). At some point, he got tired of standing and just sat on the floor, and eventually, ended up laying down on the floor. He wasn't disruptive and honestly, everyone thought it was hilarious and adorable (bride and groom included). Most people at weddings are very understanding about young kids playing a role in the wedding and how much is expected of them. At your son's age, I don't think you'll have any issue. But if you are concerned, I'd come prepared with quiet activities (coloring books, puzzles, etc.) and snacks.

My nephew was 4.5 last year at my brother's wedding, he was the ring bearer. He was fine sitting, but he was upset when it came time for the best man to give my brother the ring... he went up with his pillow LOL it was cute.

I really think it depends on the kid though. I know my own son would not be able to sit still for long.

My son was when he was two and a half. He had to be taken out of the ceremony by my husband because he was upset he had to sit down and couldn’t stand with me (I was maid of honor). He also refused to carry the sign the bride got for him and insisted on carrying my flowers instead.

My DS’s were ring bearers at just over 4 and 7. It was not a mass, but my boys were totally fine. I don’t know how long a mass is, but I think most four year olds would be ok to sit quietly for some time.

Re: Anyones kid ever a ring bearer?

my son (6.5) and daughter (3) were just the ring bearer and flower girl in a full mass wedding this past weekend. They did great but i brought activities for them to do while they sat in the pew. Coloring books, legos, dolls. They were pretty good considering. I was more regretful of the amount of money it cost for them to be in it Chat Icon Chat Icon
