Italy and London

Hi Everyone,

I am planning a trip next year with my mom, sister and my 7 year old daughter. A friend will join with her 7 year old son and 11 year old daughter. We want to spend 10 to 14 days in Europe. We will start in London and end in Italy. For the adults we would do flea markets and shopping for most of it but would love some recommendations for things to do with kids especially in Italy. We would like to go to Florence, Rome and Tuscany. Also would it make the most sense to take the train from London to Italy or to fly?. Any advice you guys can give would be appreciated.

A good market is Spital Fields, Shoreditch, and Camden Lock (check the day they are open) in London. Borough Market is also good for food.

I would suggest that you fly from London (try to fly out of Heathrow, or Gatwick. Standsted and Luton are a real pain to get to.

I have no suggestions for kid activities in Italy, sorry.

Florence has the leather market.

Rome is so packed, but the kids might really enjoy Trevi Fountain.

They will also love gelato. San Crispino is amazing and Grom is a chain and is in Florence and maybe in Rome.

I only drink wine when I go to Tuscany, so that’s not a good option for kids, lol.

Let me know if you need restaurant recs.

Thanks so much for giving that detailed response Klingklang 77. I really appreciate it!. So far the feedback I have gotten from others is to leave Tuscany for a separate trip. Please give me any good restaurant recommendations you have For London, Florence and Rome. Thanks again!.

The train ride from London to Rome is about 22 hours - definitely fly. You might be able to find a bargain by flying roundtrip to/from Heathrow and then booking inter-Europe flights on Ryan Air or Easy Jet. Of course, that would mean you stop back in London in order to head home but the savings might be worth it.

No worries!

I’ll give you some for Florence and London (I’ll get back to you on Rome, but if you could please tell me the areas you plan to be in that would be great!):

Florence:
Café Za Za. It is child friendly. Definitely get the special Tuscan bean dish there.

Ristorante Buca Mario. They have the best Florentine steaks there. It’s a real treat.

Also, you should head down to the food market there. It’s a nice cheap lunch. The best stands are on the outskirts of the indoor market.

London:

Borough Market is a great place to wander around for food.

Kennington Tandoori for great Indian. It’s a bit out of the way but it’s great.

Dishoom— more Indian food. However, you will encounter a long line. But if you go early enough it isn’t so bad. They have locations in Shoreditch and King’s Cross. Food is excellent.

For British pub food, I suggest the Grazing Goat by Marble Arch. It’s a gastropub. Somewhat pricey, but not too bad.

Make sure you eat fish and chips with mushy peas. So good!

For cheap lunches, definitely go to Pret a Manger (spelling). Cheap, simple and good. You will see them everywhere.

EAT is also a good chain. Cheap and good.

I'm forgetting a place in London, but it will come back to me soon.

I’ll get back to you about Rome.

These are cities I’ve been to a few times (London 20+x, Rome 5x, Florence 2x).

I hope this is helpful.

We went a few years ago with our then 2 yr old.

Look at the Campo de Fiori area in Rome - it's lovely. We rented an Airbnb there. And it's a quick taxi to the Vatican and walkable to lots of great sights. (Piazza Navona, Pantheon)

Go to Osteria Da Fortunata (Campo De Fiori) - there is a woman making fresh pasta in the middle of the dining area. we ate there twice, so good!

The kids might like exploring Ruins of Terme of Caracalla - it's an easy bus ride from Rome

Train between Rome & Florence - very easy

In Florence, walk over the Ponte Vecchio (shopping) and go to Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens. it's a very walkable city.

We did a day trip to Tuscany in a rental car. Totally doable from Florence. We did a tour and long lunch / tasting at Castello di Verrazzano. You could do one overnight somewhere and drive around.
