Process of employee of the month

Could use some help. Im trying to define a process for Employee of the month. And im stuck, I took this over for someone when they left. The original idea is to have managers nominate someone and the person with the most nominations "wins". But I know each manager will only nominate someone from there own team so how do we define an easy process to down select? Any ideas?
I suggested having a panel pick one based on rationale for nomination. But that was shot down since it seemed like a long process.
Any other ideas?

Re: Process of employee of the month

we do an employee of the month.

each manager nominates someone from his/her team. i collect the names and reasoning.

the sr manager is SUPPOSED to read them all and then pick the winner. all but one time i've been the one to do this part.

i use the company's guidelines for the criteria and then i pick a winner. i put the sr manager's name on it and done.

can you make it so the managers nominate two people? one from their own team and one from another team. this will create the "most votes wins" scenario?

this is how we do it for the year end awards. it makes the meeting go a lot faster than it used to.

Do you guys do huddles? We do 2x a week and we have a recognition board where we can nominate people for going above and beyond. Each month we select one winner and send them a gift card.

Can you do something similar to this?

OK so this is probably dumb but if each manager is picking on person they know deserves it and they all will be different so there will be no winner why not just use one of those online genrators and whatever one they pick is the winner for that month

We used to have employee of the quarter at my old job and it was such a pain that we stopped. But, everyone could nominate someone (even at the same level) and they had to provide a rationale on why they deserved it it the vote didn’t count.

They used to be announced at the quarterly meeting in front of the whole department. I skipped one stupid meeting and I won and wasn’t there to get my certificate. When my colleague and I became the bosses our first order of business was abolishing employee of the quarter.
