State Assessment Results
Hi. My co-worker just received the results for her son's state tests that were taken in April/May. She's in NYC. Do you know when the Long Island districts are expected to get them?

Re: State Assessment Results
I’m sorry to hi-jack your post, but are all districts required to send out results? April/May was the first time one of my kids took it and I haven’t heard a thing since.

The results were in Newsday about a week ago, so I figure we'll start hearing soon.

State Assessment Results
If you have a parent portal, they should be posted in the assessments section when they're available.

Re: State Assessment Results
Legit question because I am not really versed in this. What are the scores used for? Just to assess the teachers? Does it mean anything for the kids?

Generally it means nothing for the kids. Sometimes the scores are factors for certain programs, but you can also do a portfolio instead
My DS has never taken one and is in 6th. He got into a STEM program this year despite this (and being told it could hinder him not taking the test) BUT clearly since the test results come out later and later every year, they're not used for placement.

In our district it means nothing. Kids are still promoted, and the grades from the tests are not on the report card. My son would get 2's on everything (special ed), and there were no "consequences". I've heard other districts use them for placement..but not sure how that works when you get the results back way after school starts.

Re: State Assessment Results
Thanks. I kind of knew that but I was curious since I haven't experienced one yet. DD is supposed to take them this year for the first time-- I think I will just opt her out. Seems pointless.

Re: State Assessment Results
They are not used for placement, but they are used to evaluate teachers in our district after the first year. They are generally used to help the teacher know what to emphasize for kids and differentiate education within the classroom.

My DS took them last year in 3rd grade, so it was my first experience with it. I think it was a good idea because I just got his scores and he did ridiculously good in math and I’ve been pushing for him to be in gifted math but they were pushing back bc of his speech ((he’s pulled out for speech during gifted math)) so now I’ll be raising hell and with proof. And he did fine in English but now I have certain points that need attention.
However, now that I see in 4th they “teach to the test” I’ll be opting out from now on.

I had seen it in the print edition. Here is a link, but you have you type in the district you want to see. I don't think it just gives an alphabetical list.

Won't they teach to the test whether you opt out or not? I am curious why this affects the decision.

Yes they still will, but the goal is to get enough of an opt out rate that the state rethinks the tests altogether. It's a long term goal type thing I think

I just got the email from my DD's school. So, probably most schools will send them out soon too.

Re: State Assessment Results
We got ours last Wednesday 9/26 on my student.nyc account. We were looking there every day, since DS is in 8th grade and we are in the process to apply to HS, and this is an admission requirement for most of the main round HS. What a nightmare
Saying that, I'm glad DS has taken the tests every year, not because of the tests per se, but to build stamina and to know what to expect when taking tests. The next one is the SHSAT in 2 weeks, and while the content is different, at least he is ready to seat down for 3 hours without complains.

I agree. There are going to be tests in life. Unless the kid gets totally stressed about it, there's no reason why they shouldn't take it, IMO.

There's "no reason" for children to be forced to sit for HOURS at a time to take tests that are developmentally inappropriate and written for children MUCH older. I taught 3rd grade last year and the ELA test was hard. It was written at an 8th grade reading level and I had kids crying. It is too hard for them. The reading passages are boring as all get out and furthermore, they are entirely too difficult for them. The 8th grade test was geared for 12th graders.
Teacher and mom of 3 and my children have never taken a NYS assessment. These tests are designed to set the kids up for failure so they can blame the teachers. Its an absurd and cruel system.
Yes.. there will be tests in life. How about allowing teachers to teach and to then create a FAIR assessment at the end to determine understanding? This system is beyond broken. Politicians and school text book companies need to step back and allow educators to do the work of educating.
To answer the OPS question, the results are out. They are meaningless. Stepping down now

State Assessment Results
My daughter has plenty of tests in class. They even use scan-tron for them. So, the argument that they have to get used to THESE tests in order to be successful in taking REAL tests that MATTER is a poor one.

Thank you for writing this. I have been on the fence about whether or not my DD should take these tests now that she is in 3rd grade and i have to make a decision. I have always leaned towards opting her out, but there was always a nagging voice in my "goody two shoes" brain that said I shouldn't. She reads well, is good in math, so I was thinking, well maybe I'm doing her an injustice. But reading this, and the fact that the passages are an EIGHTH GRADE level in 3rd grade- just made my decision for me. My DD is in 3rd now and I can't see her having the attention span for this or the reading level- and she reads above grade level. What the hell is wrong with this state? Disgraceful
