Anyone giving birth at Katz LIJ New Hyde Park location
A friend who works in the Katz building at LIJ New Hyde Park told me due to overcrowding in L &D, they’re moving postpartum recovery out of the Katz building to the old LIJ hospital building where rooms are double occupancy. My friend wasn’t sure about a time frame for when this is happening. This is a major bummer... I’ve loved the hotel feel and size/privacy of the Katz rooms after each time I’ve given birth.

That seems like bad business. They’re going to solve their overcrowding problem fast because patients will go elsewhere. Those rooms are a huge draw. In fact, I delivered at NSUH and the deciding factor between choosing a doctor affiliated with there and Cornell was the private rooms.

Over crowding, youre only allowed to stay for 2 days anyway. Id rather just go home.

If this is true many folks will switch OBs to deliver elsewhere. A lot of people left their OB/GYN affiliated with Winthrop to deliver at LIJ.

Re: Anyone giving birth at Katz LIJ New Hyde Park location
Question- Is this also listed at Glen Oaks? On 76th Ave? I was just at that hospital this weekend and was impressed by the rooms and thinking of switching since it's closer to my house anyway.

Yes, I’m pretty sure the address for Katz is 76th Ave. I had both of my kids there and it’s a very nice facility. Just wish it was closer to me. I’m having another in May and I’m terrified of the drive from eastern Nassau! It’s the only hospital my dr delivers at so I’ll be there again.
The private rooms and very nice birthing rooms are a plus and I would be disappointed if that changes.

Thank you! My father is actually in the hospital now and he's in the Zuckerberg Pavilion and I was super impressed by the rooms. I had my DD at NYU Langone in Manhattan which was a great hospital but I had a tiny shared room for recovery and it was miserable, especially considering we'll have DD visiting as well this time around. May I ask where your doctor is located if you don't mind sharing? I'm very interested in switching, I'm only about 20 minutes away from LIJ Katz, much better than trying to slog through rush hour traffic to get to the city while in labor! And of course my doctor only delivers at Langone. lol!

My doctor is in Bellmore. Dr Bashian, and there’s also another one in the practice Dr Frenkel whose awesome. They both deliver at Katz. Having the private clean recovery room does make the 2-4 days you’re there more comfortable.

Three of my best friends also use that practice and love the doctors but always curse the clerical staff (they seem to make a lot of errors). But yes, it is true that Katz is now sending postpartum women over to the old building with shared rooms due to overcrowding. I know someone that works as a director for LIJ.

I have to say, the office has gotten much better than it was when I had my last baby. I used to wait FOREVER in the waiting room (like almost 2 hours) and this time around it’s been like 15 minutes. Huge improvement. Hopefully it stays that way.

Are all post-delivery women going over to the shared rooms? Or is it just the overflow if mother/baby is at capacity?

I think it's based on capacity. My friend just had a baby there last week and she stayed in the private room the whole time. I did give her name to a director that works there though, but it didn't seem like she had to pull any major strings to get to stay there.

Thank you for that! I delivered my first there in 2015 and had a great experience....the private room being a key component to that. Due this upcoming May so I guess I just have to pray for a slow week there...
