Pediatrician Vent
My 2 kids are due for their yearly on 3/18- I call to make their appointment and I tell the receptionist I need a Saturday appointment or an appointment after 5- she says to me- why can't you take them out of school
Um hello I have a job and I am not taking my kid out of school for a check up -isn't school important???
So annoyed like come on work with a working mother for god's sake....

Yeah eff that. I don't take my kid out of school for anything.
DD needed a cavity filled and the receptionist took like 20 min to understand she is IN SCHOOL and it has to be after 3 or on a weekend.
These offices need to get with the times and offer some better hours for both kids in school AND working parents.
It's annoying.

It really is. I find the dentist to be the worst... Im booking appointments six months out to get them during the summer or a school break. SMH

Not to mention, schools frown upon that. My kids school specifically says to make all appointments after school or on weekends/days off.

I mean I take my kids out of school for a lot of things, but I'm not taking off of work to take my kids for a yearly check up.
I've had to do a for a specialist, but no way I'm doing that for a regular visit.

i get it... i don't like taking my boys out of school either.. BUT i also can see the doctor's side. I mean they have families and kids and stuff, too... so they want to maintain the weekday work hours just like most other people. its a tough situation all around... i usually try to make my boys appointments at the very end of their school day, so they only miss like a half hour if anything... and DH or i don't have to miss a ton of work...

I find it annoying too. I wouldn’t have my kid miss school for a regular pediatrician appt or routine dentist appt. But my Dd’s orthodontist only works 2 days a week in this particular office, so her office hours are limited. She’s getting a palate expander and I needed to book 2 separate appts, so I chose one at 3pm and one at 9am. I’ll just pick her up early one day and send her in a little late the other. She won’t be missing much.

Yeah I don't mind leaving work early- or working from home to take her to an appt, but I prefer to not pull her out of school.
So if I can do a 4 pm appt or even a 3 pm (she's home by 2:40) that's fine.
She sees a pediatric ophthalmologist once a year and their last appt is 330 pm since they have to dilate her eyes and it takes a while, so for that I have DH pick her up like 20 min early to make it to Commack. That I don't mind because it's once a year and she misses pretty much nothing in those last 20 in of school.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking your child out of school for a doctor’s appointment.
I think the fact that the receptionist said this to a parent is unprofessional and ridiculous. What if the parent can’t take off from work?

I used to never take my kids out of school and I would have to wait so long for an appt. It was annoying. Now I just take them out. However, I work from home so it's easier. It's hard because ideally I think anyone with school aged children would prefer after school/work appts but the doctors probably also want to get home to their families as well. If they were to extend hours so that every school aged child could be seen then it would make it very difficult. As far as doctors go, Pediatricians do not make very much so I can see why they would try to contain their hours to normal working hours as much as possible.

I agree. My days off are precious and trust me I use tons of vacation days to take my son who has autism for evals, specialist appts, IEP meetings, etc. I couldn’t just take a day off for a check up for one of my kids.

Yes I find the dentist to be the worst with this. They don’t have weekend appointments and won’t take young children after school because they said they do better in morning...so I always have to send him in late.

I would be annoyed, also. I have flexibility but I don't want to take my kid out of school for a regular check up when it can be done at a later time or on a Saturday. Very unprofessional of the receptionist.

I'm pretty sure it's not even considered a legal absence. I'll take them out for a specialist but not for a regular well visit.

True, but if you have a very limited schedule you should probably call prior to 3 weeks out. Especially if you want both kids to go at once.

I always call early and for the dentist they let us make the next 6 month check up appt as we are leaving the current check up appt so it's great

Listen, I know its hard to be a working mom but check-ups are part of our parental duties that were probably in the fine print when we signed up for the job... Its frustrating that we need to accommodate the world rather than the world accommodate us.

I think it is unrealistic to expect for a doctor's office to have a Saturday or evening appointment within 2-3 weeks of your calling (assuming you posted the same day that you had the issue).

Actually from the original post you can't tell if the receptionist was rude - merely that she asked the question. I don't think it's that horrible to suggest taking them out of school. I also think it's unfair to expect your pediatrician to work around your schedule. If they have weekend or evening hours then you should expect them to book up very quickly and plan accordingly.
