Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?

The DR is one of those places I have never had any desire to go. Same with most places in Mexico. I know *most* people are fine, but it just doesn't feel safe enough.

Of course I would never venture out alone at night to the beach of the local town, but you assume you're safe in the hotel hallway.

Don't these places have cameras???

Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?

DR and Mexico have been off my list for a while. A few times I've almost been persuaded to go there because of their beautiful beaches and resorts. However, I could not bring myself to pull the trigger. I always felt like I'd never be able to relax. This poor woman. I hope she's able to heal and recover from this.

Wow. I stayed at that hotel.

To be honest, the DR has been the only place I've visited (in the caribbean) where I haven't felt safe, and it's the only place I won't visit again.

I agree with this. I would never go back.

I remember when I went there in 2007 and how shockedI was at the heavyly armed police at the airport. The guns were like nothing I'd seen before at that time. Really made me uncomfortable.

I've said I'd like to go back. But 12 yrs later I still haven't. And after seeing a recent travel advisory issued last month don't know if I would be going anytime soon. It's a shame because the beaches and beautiful.

This resort didn't.

Not sure about others. But I feel it wouldn't matter. As someone else mentioned it's so corrupt over there I'm sure nothing would be done. Same with Mexico.
Best thing to do is always be with someone. But I mean you're at your resort you would think walking to get a snack would be safe.
Just awful.

I remember when I was in Jamaica many years ago they had armed guards with machine guns at the pool. Made me feel really uncomfortable to come up out of the water and see that.
And fencing out in the water too so nobody could come up too close to the beach via jet skis.
I felt like i was in prison.
It was awful

Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?

My dad's cousin was robbed and murdered in Aruba. The 2 murderers were proven guilty but served no jail time and walked away free. The nightmare my great Aunt and her family went through during that time is terrible. I would never give that country a dime of my money. The corruption is so blatant in some foreign countries it is hard to comprehend. We may have our problems here in the US, but when it comes to protection under the law I would not want to be anywhere else than here if I had something bad happen to me. I feel terrible for this poor woman and her family, but thank God she is alive.

Now that I am moving to an age where I will become "invisible" to men...I need to remember that I am still visible as a victim. It's sad that I don't feel safe alone at the beach at times because sometimes I am the only one there and anything could happen.

OMG! that is horrible. She said the attacker was uniformed, why didnt they question the employees? OMG I cant imagine. I feel like unless there is a boycott of these places then they wont turn around and realize tourism is their livelyhood. I'm in tears for her and her family how terrible.

On a side note we went to Jamaica in March and a group were discussing an attack at a hotel there. Everyone said they werent scared and Im talking repeat guests like 13 times in a decade type thing. We always walked in groups and I never let the kids out of my sight but were never afraid. We are going again in July to our favorite Hilton. I say if you are going to travel dont venture alone at night.

Is your favorite Hilton Rose Hall? I’m supposed to go in February, and now I’m rethinking after this incident.

I stayed at the Majestic Colonial (their sister resort) in the DR like 15 years ago and it was similar. Armed guards with machine guns patrolling the beach under our balcony at night and at the front gates. It made me very weary. I would not return.

I read a question recently on a website where it asked women what they would do if men were not allowed out at night and it made me so sad because the responses were "walk on the beach alone at night and look at the moon", "jog by myself after dinner", etc and I remember thinking it's such a shame that we can't just let our guard down and enjoy our lives without having to worry about being raped or murdered.

Recently, on one of the posts here, someone had said that they felt gender bathrooms were antiquated and they should just do away with it. Strictly from a gender standpoint, I get it, but my first thought was safety. The post had something to do with Penn Station and all I thought of was going into a Penn Station bathroom late at night and seeing a guy in there would make me feel so unsafe. There are so many creepy men out there.

This poor woman doesn't even know for sure if she was raped, but it sounds like she was, and she has to live with that. I can't believe that animal is walking scott free. He may very well be still working at that resort seeking out his next victim.

This is so scary. We were in Mexico recently too and I totally felt safe, but you never know. Ugh! Makes me sick to my stomach.
I think I read she went to just go get a snack and next thing she knows she's attached.
How long ago did this happen? I can't believe the resort hasn't even made a statement yet!
How did the woman get home and how long was she in the hospital there? They really should've reimbursed her and taken care of the medical bills.

I'm pretty sure it happened in January - she said she needed time to really reflect and take it in before she made the FB post.

She was in the hospital for 5 days

I really want to hear what the resort has to say

Wow that’s terrible! Was it at the resort? I think of aruba as one of the safest places to go!

*sorry this was in response to the aruba comment.

Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?

Found an article that said this today:

"The social media accounts for an all-inclusive resort chain in the Dominican Republic have vanished after a woman’s Facebook post about an alleged attack in January at one of the properties went viral.

Tammy Lawrence-Daley of Wilmington, Delaware, shared a heartbreaking post yesterday in which she claimed she was forced into an unlocked maintenance room, brutally attacked, and left for dead while vacationing at the Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana. She further claims that her attacker was wearing a uniform with the resort logo on it.

After the story was widely covered in the media yesterday, the Majestic Resorts social media pages were flooded with angry comments, many wondering why the company had not responded to Lawrence-Daley’s story. (According to her post, the resort did not reimburse her for her vacation or pay her medical bills.)

As of this morning, Majestic’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts were all inactive, although it’s unclear if they were deleted permanently or just deactivated."

They were reached for comment, but never answered..

People need to start boycotting these dumps. That's the only thing that will make a difference. Clearly they only give a shit about money so they need to be hit where it hurts.

Last week I had an issue with an airline. The next day I went on their Facebook page and complained. Within in minutes they responded asking me to private messages them with my flight confirmation number etc. I did and within the hour they responded with a long, well thought out apology and $600 worth of credits.
And this was for a delayed flight, not a brutal, horrific attack.

It's mind boggling that this resort has done NOTHING for this woman. A law suit is in order.

First, heyJude I am so sorry your family had to go through this tragedy, how awful.

Second, when I saw the post on Fb about this woman a few days ago, I didn't react because I wanted to make sure the story was true before making a comment. Then, it was on the today show feature, and I believed it. I'm not surprised at the level of disconnect from the resort corporation and the DR government agencies.

To those of you who can't fathom how this could happen, it's because we actually have a government with checks and balances, a justice system, and a set of laws that are both followed and enforced. Many of these small post-colonial islands are unstable, riddled with corruption and a sense of lawlessness. They don't even follow traffic lights if they don't want to. Jamaica has been on the state dept. shit list for a long time.

While I do agree with you. Let’s not forget that even with checks and balances the US is still corrupt and very bad sh!t happens here. People getting off free for killing innocent unarmed people all the time. Innocent people getting locked for years.

VA beach shooting that happened yesterday. An woman getting killed for getting in the wrong car that she thought was an Uber. If that happened in the Caribbean we would hear the same thing of how dangerous and why people never go there or trust cabs etc.

It’s so sad that this happen but let’s please not act like the US is the safest place in the world. And we do treat immigrants like crap as well.
