Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
I think the Article did say she brought litigation and got nowhere. Not even the DNA fresh at the scene was looked at by the law enforcement. I can't even imagine going through that. It really angers me for her.
Again, I am all for that boycott on any resort that acts in this manner.
ETA: I've never felt unsafe in any of the Caribbean Islands I've visited whether alone or with my family and I've been to many of them many many times.

First, heyJude I am so sorry your family had to go through this tragedy, how awful.
Second, when I saw the post on Fb about this woman a few days ago, I didn't react because I wanted to make sure the story was true before making a comment. Then, it was on the today show feature, and I believed it. I'm not surprised at the level of disconnect from the resort corporation and the DR government agencies.
To those of you who can't fathom how this could happen, it's because we actually have a government with checks and balances, a justice system, and a set of laws that are both followed and enforced. Many of these small post-colonial islands are unstable, riddled with corruption and a sense of lawlessness. They don't even follow traffic lights if they don't want to. Jamaica has been on the state dept. shit list for a long time.
While I do agree with you. Let’s not forget that even with checks and balances the US is still corrupt and very bad sh!t happens here. People getting off free for killing innocent unarmed people all the time. Innocent people getting locked for years.
VA beach shooting that happened yesterday. An woman getting killed for getting in the wrong car that she thought was an Uber. If that happened in the Caribbean we would hear the same thing of how dangerous and why people never go there or trust cabs etc.
It’s so sad that this happen but let’s please not act like the US is the safest place in the world. And we do treat immigrants like crap as well.
Yes, we may have a system of checks and balances in place (and we see how well that's working out), but our justice system is severely flawed and we have our own blatant corruption. So we don't exactly get to hold the moral high ground when it comes to fairness, justice, and equality in this country. The main thing that separates us from these corrupt impoverished countries is the status of being labeled a first world nation, and for being a first world nation we really do have more in common with some of those developing nations than we do with other first world nations.

Yes, we have many problems, and no, we are not the safest place in the whole wide world. But we have a living Constitution, and a justice system (flawed, yes) Some of the countries I am talking about have an elitist oligarchy or even lawlessness and corruption at a level we can't understand. Basics, like not following traffic laws and lack of enforcement against violent crimes for fear of gang warfare. My comments were strictly related to the lack of investigation and attention this crime got before this poor woman got back to the US.
I've traveled extensively to the Caribbean and I felt safe inside the resort, too. But I'm realistic when it comes to governments and their stability.

Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
Dh has a friend who is from one of these countries and who had to go back there for several years as a part of his route to becoming a legal US citizen. The stories he tells about the govt and laws and police forces and what goes on would make your skin crawl. This isn't about a moral high ground or feeling the US is the best or safest country in the world. But can anyone really say they would rather live in one of these places than here? Come on. Do you really think that if the same exact thing happened to this woman at a resort here it wouldn't have been handled a bit better here??

Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
We definitely have it better here than in many places where corruption is the rule of law, that's not even an argument. But, we're light years behind other developed countries for different reasons. If you're an American of a certain status it's hard to understand the problems people of a lower class face here. We take a lot for granted. In many of those overtly corrupt places the line between classes is blurred. We're the kind of place with an astronomical level of waste and where homeless kids go to bed starving at night or people die for lack of medicine. In those other places everyone goes to bed hungry and lacks medical access. And many of our problems tend to be first world problems, like spreading nationwide panic over the loss of Twinkies . We'll riot and torch entire cities to the ground over losing sports teams, losing baked goods, or police brutality. We're probably the only place in the world where someone despicable like O.J. Simpson or Casey Anthony can walk free of their heinous crimes and then go on to write a best seller detailing their crime or something equally ridiculous.

Re: Anyone see the story about the woman attacked in D.R?
I'm from Colombia and the corruption there makes me want to cry. From the simple level, where you pay a traffic cop so he won't issue a ticket, to high levels in politics. People don't respect police officers there, because they know they can be bought. What happened in the hotel is horrible. Unfortunately, nothing will get resolved because most probably police is linked somehow with the hotel. I've heard about that in Mexico. The employees are poor and see the opportunity to make money out of the guests.
I heard a case of a young couple in Cancun a couple of years ago. He went to the room to shower and she stayed by the pool. Then she disappeared and showed up hours later dead by the pool and they were saying she was drunk and jumped from their balcony, etc. The boyfriend, a 22 year old boy, was asked to give them 5.000 so he wouldn't be implicated. That was by the police. The case in DR is different, but the level of corruption is sad.
In Jamaica, I was even offered pot in an all inclusive hotel, while I was going into the lazy river with my DS that was around 3 at the time. Go figure.
It's scary you can't go on vacation and feel relaxed to walk alone at night.

There are also a lot of stories of tainted alcohol in "5 star" resorts in Mexico. People passing out and even dying after one drink. Then hospitals extorting money from people when they show up there as a result

That's right. I've read the same. When that case in Cancun happened, I started reading about that, and it is terrible to read the things that can happen. I have to say, though, we've been 3 times in Cancun and never had any problem, but you need to be very careful.

I most certainly would go to DR or PR if I could but my DH can’t and I know a lot of people who have relocated. It’s not the norm on LIF land but yes there are quite a few people who do go to the Caribbean or would if they had the chance.

Exactly, totally agree. There are also a few examples mentioned on this thread that happen right here in US. Lol.

We are pretty spoiled. There's a distinct dichotomy here. Some are fortunate enough to be taking luxury resort vacations in impoverished areas where people are living in squalor so they can swim with dolphins, but probably can't relate to other Americans who are dying because they can't afford insulin or feed their kids or live in fear of their kids being shot in a drive by at any given moment.

This story is so disturbing. I have been to a lot of these places (Mexico, DR, PR, Costa Rica) and I can honestly say that I won’t go back now, especially with my kids. I also won’t take a cruise as I know someone that was given a roofie on a cruise, fell and got hurt and they literally did nothing to investigate because of “maritime law”.

I still cannot stop thinking about this poor woman and her story. I used to travel to Mexico a lot. Loved it there, and never felt unsafe. Once the US started putting out warning about the drug trafficking etc I stopped going. They urged people to continue to go to the resort areas as they weren't affected but I still didn't feel good about it, and now with all this talk about "the wall" etc I'd never go there for fear that they hate Americans. This past year my husband and I were missing Mexico so much. We've been to many places in the Caribbean -- Bahamas, Aruba, st maarten, grand cayman. We always felt safe. We decided to try out DR. I just got back a month or so ago. Had the best time of our lives. Never saw a gun, never felt unsafe. It was beautiful. Now reading this I feel so uneasy. I agree it can happen anywhere but the recourse is terrifying. Can we not go anywhere anymore??? If you look online DR, Jamacia, Costa Rica, Mexico even France all have the same warnings. What would it say about the USA? I dunno, it just sucks.

Did you see there was a couple who also died at the same time from what they say was “natural causes” and also a single woman who died from a drink from the mini bar? Same chain of resorts I believe. All in DR.

What was going on in Mexico a year or so ago that caused a travel warning was that they were tainting the liquor so that people would get sick and show up at the hospital and then they would say they don't take your insurance and you have to pay X amount to be treated. It was all an extortion thing. But some people actually died from it. Because god knows what they were putting in it and how much of it anyone was getting. A young girl's family is actually suing a resort over this.

I went to DR once and hated it. I thought it was sketchy and the people at the resort were so nasty to us. We spent a lot of $$ too. I said we would never go back and this just put the nail in the coffin for me. Most of the people I know that went to DR feel the same way too

There’s also a story now about a couple from Colorado who were poisoned with insecticide in their room at the same hotel - can’t link on my phone - but they made it back to the US and their doctor diagnosed the poisoning.
