What could be causing this cough?

DS has been coughing at night when he goes to sleep and in the morning when he wakes up.
He coughs ONCE in awhile during the day, but mostly at night and in the morning.

My wife thinks:
1. Because it mainly happens in the bedroom (at night and in the morning) its due to the bedroom being dusty.

2. Since its been hot, we've been using the AC in the bedroom.

But I'm not so sure about those 2 ideas because:
1. His cough (to me) sounds productive and the other day he coughed up a bunch of phlegm. Cough due to dust is usually a dry/irritated cough.

2. Same as above. People usually cough in the cold air due to the cold air irritating their throats and its usually a dry cough not a phlegmy one.

He doesn't seem to have a cold. no sneezing or runny nose.

If its just a viral chest/lung infection medicine won't help and we need to give it time.

Dr. Google suggested asthma (since he coughs at night) but that seems to be a dry cough also.

Any other ideas?

Re: What could be causing this cough?

Possibly allergies?
Maybe try some benedryl at night and see if it helps?

I would think allergies also. Between the air conditioning and dust, my 7 year old also has the same thing. Mucusy in the morning but pretty fine throughout the rest of the day. Maybe it could also be post nasal drip?

Re: What could be causing this cough?

My son has the same. Ped said that it is post nasal drip. This time of year is particularly difficult for kids who suffer from allergies.

My son did this and it was allergies especially to dust.

Your ped should be able to help you out.

We put the mattress in a plastic like bag liner. Launder sheets every week. Toss pillows every few months. Get a air purifier... this was key for us and worked overnight.

That's what I'd say. DD has this from time to time.

Allergies or dry air in the house.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Do allergies cause phlegmy coughs?

Like I said, I've gotten a face full of dust before and it irritated my throat but my cough was a dry cough there was no phelgm.

Can the pediatrician tell if it is an allergy by doing some kind of test?
DD has eczema and she reacts to the prick test for certain items, but DS has great skin so we never thought he would have any allergies (like me, I have great skin and no allergies of any kind)

BUT, I did take a look at the AC and it was full of dust and black specs (which I assume is mold).
So I vacuumed the filter and then took the air vent off and cleaned it with bleach.

I used a clorox wipe to wipe as much as I could inside with my hand. I don't see anymore black specs but who knows what there is inside the AC.
Maybe to be safe we'll use the AC for the next month or so then retire it in the fall and get a new one in the spring.

Thanks everyone

This describes my daughter EXACTLY right now. Chat Icon She picked up a summer cold last week and now has a post nasal drip that won't go away.

She has asthma so I have to monitor her. We pulled her off of the daily Flovent for the summer but I have to put her back on it. I don't know how she's getting any sleep with this cough.

I would try to get a new AC. If there were black specks around the outside, chances are the inside is filled with mold. We dealt with that last year. I opened up a part of it just to see and the entire inside of the AC was lined with black mold. Needless to say, we tossed it. Not all black mold is toxic, but you could have toxic mold in there. Even if he doesn't have allergies, toxic mold would cause a reaction.

Most allergies will start with a dry cough, but yes, allergies can cause a wet mucousy cough. Repeated exposure will cause your body to try protect itself by continuously thickening the protective mucous lining in your nose, throat and lungs.

I would get a new AC, wash everything in the room, wipe down the furniture, and carpet clean. Mold spores get into everything and any moisture will just sprout more mold. The AC is basically just shooting them all over the room.

I don't know if you do it already, but when you take your ACs out of the window and put them away for the fall, make sure you allow them to dry out completely for a day or so before putting them away.

A night time cough not associated with a cold could definitely be asthma. I would have your DC see a pediatrician for a referral to pediatric pulmonology
