WWYD - New Terrible Neighbors
We had great neighbors all my life and then they decided to try and sell their home. They weren't able to sell for what they wanted to so after about a year on the market, they decided to rent it out using a property manager and moved down south. The new tenants moved in four months ago and they are TERRIBLE. There are always so many cars at the house, parties. Friday was the third fight in the past few weeks (which literally turned into a brawl). People call SCPD and they come but nothing ever comes of it because we believe all of these fights are family-related. They just break it up until the next event happens, I guess. Usually, there's a party that ends in a brawl by the same people who were enjoying themselves hours before. On Friday, their kids were cheering them on. They block traffic with their fights and then try to start fights with the people in the cars that are trying to get through. We basically hide in our house until it's over. What can we do other than call SCPD? Anything? I'm pretty sure my neighbors wouldn't want people who are destroying their house like this but I'm also scared of retaliation if we reach out to the Property Management company about what's going on. Maybe my neighbors don't care as long as they're getting the $$$ in their pocket? What should we do? I'm so anxious over this!

Re: WWYD - New Terrible Neighbors
I would see if i could get in touch with homeowners. Either through property management company or straight up detective work to find their contact info. If they don’t do anything about it ...What town are you in? In my town, owners cannot rent if they don’t live in the state. So you can check with your town to see if they are even supposed to be renting. If they aren’t, then the town can make them remove the tenants and then they’d have to sell.
I’m sorry. Having terrible neighbors really stinks. Police can only do so much.
Edited to fix the million typos

How do you know it’s an illegal rental?
To the OP I don’t think there is much you can do besides calling the police and reaching out to the owners. If they have young children cheering them on to fight call CPS

the only legal rental is one that the home owner lives in and if they are over 65 and applied for a permit. Outside of that no rental of a single family home is legal. But you;re right Mrs213 I am assuming.
IMO call the property management co, call the town and DOCUMENT it all with videos and pictures. Paper trail with the police and town. OP if you are friend or even if not contact the owner of the rental directly and let them know what is going on.
OP you can also try and contact the POP unit if in Nassau county, Suffolk has a similar unit.
its a community based policing unit.
As the past president of a civic these are what I recommend.
adding, if you have a local civic association in your area, contact, join and place a complaint through them, this way the complaint if coming from the Civic not you if it makes you feel better and less worry about your name on the paperwork.
My civic placed complaints for residents all the time

It is not illegal (in most, if not all, towns on LI) to rent out an entire house (which is what it sounds like this is).

Re: WWYD - New Terrible Neighbors
Ugh I definitely feel you because our house next door to us is a rental and we have had our fair share of bad neighbors over the years but not to the extreme like what you are going through. Keep calling the cops on them, and I would also see if there is any way to get in touch with the landlord to let them know what is going on. Just a question, how would they know that its you specifically that filed a complaint? There are other neighbors that must be fed up with them as well, right?

either way, reporting renters to the town is okay and I recommend that along with all the options I stated. Rentals such as this brings down the value of the homes around it

We know for sure it is not an illegal rental in this situation!

I guess but we never really see anyone else out - maybe they're all hiding too? We're just paranoid and scared lolol. They seem like they dgaf about each other so we're pretty sure they would think nothing of coming over and doing something stupid to us/our property.
I've been trying to reach my neighbor these past few days, hoping they respond/see my attempts soon!
